NATURAL STONE
term structural integrity of the floor. Problems such as cracking due to freeze-thaw, natural stone staining, warping, efflorescence and even weed growth on loosely laid tiles or slabs is inevitable if surface water is able to penetrate below the tiled surface and cannot drain away quickly enough.
“BY REMOVING THE WATER, YOU ARE
TAKING AWAY THE BIGGEST THREAT
AND PROTECTING THE LONG TERM STRUCTURAL
INTEGRITY OF THE FLOOR.”
As well as protecting against frost damage, staining and water damage, the BAL external tiling system can also reduce static weight loading on balconies by utilising thinner assemblies, lighter materials and limiting water absorption and retention, which in turn reduces water loading.
BAL is introducing a number of Gutjahr products to its portfolio for complete tiling solutions including waterproofing, drainage matting, mortar, drain grates and guttering, all of which help installers, contractors and specifiers to conform to British Standard BS 5385- 3: 2014 – 6.8.1.4 Balconies and Roof Terraces, that states:
“Balconies and terraces should be checked for anticipated static/ dynamic loading demands. All materials selected for use in balcony and terrace construction should be checked for suitability prior to their installation. The tile selected for installation should be sufficiently slip resistant and be suitable for the anticipated traffic. Consideration to the environmental surroundings of the balcony or terrace should be given and only suitable materials selected for construction based on the impact posed by the location i.e. marine environments.”

Among the systems on offer from BAL are the TerraMaxx® PF with AquaDrain® T+ laying system for the adhesion of slabs, natural stone, 20 mm porcelain and other outdoor coverings. Whilstthe AquaDrain® EK passive capillary drainage system for the solid bed fixing of ceramic, porcelain and natural stone and concrete paving.
In the TerraMaxx® PF laying system, break proof coverings are fixed at points to the AquaDrain® T+ surface drainage mat. Seepage water is then rapidly shed through the drainage channels in the AquaDrain® T+.
Providing the same benefits of solid- bed fixing, it is up to 80 % lighter than conventional assemblies, and the complete build-up can be achieved from only 23 mm including the coverings – saving 70% of the overall construction height.
AquaDrain® EK system includes the same passive capillary drainage mat system but is specially designed for laying outdoor coverings on drainage mortar (or resin-bonded mortar) where solid bed fixing is required, e.g. for patios and the fixing of ceramic tiles, natural stone and concrete paving. Thanks to the unique mesh, raising the complete surface (maximum height build-up of 68 mm, with tiles, and 80 mm with natural stone or concrete paving) and high drainage volume, the entire system provides a rapid and immediate drainage solution.
The Gutjahr system also includes a range of drainage grates and gullies, trims and profiles, which are available in a number of interchangeable sizes and designs for varying assembly heights or individual requirements.
Available to order this summer, Gutjahr System Technology represents new, innovative ideas – a vision shared by BAL. The products are as diverse as the outdoor installations for which they are intended.
BAL is proud to incorporate Gutjahr’s product range exclusively within the BAL portfolio as a further development of a full system service from the UK market-leader for tiling.
