FEATURE A LOOK BACK:

The Health & Safety Event 2016, run by Western Business Exhibition’s, this year focused on the theme of ‘Three Days to Save a Life’. Now in its third year the event organisers have drawn on visitor feedback in a bid to build on previous years and arguably their efforts paid off.

This year’s show expanded its educational offers to include an array of content, interactive forums and product and service providers. A new offer was introduced - the Education Pavilion, partnered with the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety & Health (NEBOSH).

All of the industry’s big names were present including the British Safety Council (BSC), the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) and Health & Safety Executive. Kevin Myers, Director General of Regulation, Health & Safety Executive (HSE) discussed the HSE's new strategy for the health and safety system in the exhibitions Conference Theatre.

The Safer Logistics Theatre provided advice for those looking to overcome the safety challenges in warehousing and logistics. Representatives from CILT UK, Toyota Material Handling UK, UKWA and A-Safe gave talks on a variety of hot topics.

Elsewhere, in the Safety Dialogue Theatre audiences were encouraged to get involved in live debates focused on issues about hearing conservation and respiratory protection. Exhibitors also had an opportunity to shine with the very first Lions’ Lair, which saw 16 finalists pitching their ideas in front of a live audience and battling their wits against a panel of probing experts.

Making its debut at this year’s event, the Lions’ Lair proved to be a popular new feature. Former England rugby international and ex-RAF pilot Rory Underwood, delivered an interesting presentation on behavioural safety on the final morning, before crowning SoNQ the debut Lions’ Lair winner for

its compliance software. The three runners up were TSI Instruments, Semmco and Fortress Distribution.

Evac + Chair received the Best Stand Prize for their impressive display. Steve Lucas, Head of Creative and Marketing, who designed the stand, explained: “This year we wanted to take our stand one step further and make it completely interactive. We feel really proud to have achieved our objectives.”

Event Director Tim Else, commented: “Having listened to feedback from our visitors for the past two years, we’ve made significant additions to the content and layout of the NEC show, which continues to go from strength to strength. The positive feedback we’ve received post-show underlines the importance that visitors place on a national health and safety event held at the NEC.”

Neal Stone, Policy and Standards Director at BSC, the event’s official educational partner, commented: “The show had so much to offer all those involved in managing the risk of workplace injury and ill health. The BSC was proud once again to be the education partner and play its part in helping to build knowledge and competence.”

The ‘Ask the Expert’ facility in the Education Pavilion was met with a positive response, so much so that pavilion sponsors NEBOSH has announced that it will sponsor the service for the next three events – Health & Safety North in October 2016, the Health and Safety Event in March 2017 and Health and Safety Scotland in May 2017.

So for those who enjoyed this event – you don’t have too long to wait until the next Western-arranged industry gathering... Health & Safety North is set to take place at the Bolton Arena on 12th and 13th October.
