FEATURE
There are few ‘one-size-fits-all’ products that will meet all work at height regulations. The right choice will depend on the task, the working height, the stability of the surface and the competence of the user.
Before beginning a task where working at height is required, it is important to ask a few key questions. Will the task be complete in less than 30 minutes? If so, will the ladder be positioned on a level and stable foundation?
Ladders should only be used for short periods of time, for light work and should not be used if the user has to over-stretch. Any work that is done with the aid of a ladder should always be carried out face-on.
Working at Height regulations actually prohibit over stretching, which can ultimately diminish productivity if the user cannot move around easily, or if they are confined to a very small work area. Ladders are also not suitable if there is a requirement to lift awkward or heavy loads.
IS IT FIT FOR PURCHASE? With safety always of paramount importance, a number of key product considerations should be taken into account at the point of purchase. These include factors such as whether the ladder is equipped with secure non-slip treads; if it’s the right size and material for the job; whether it has a secure standing platform with ample standing space; and if the ladder is equipped with a high safety handrail. It is also important that the user always has three points of contact regardless of the job they’re undertaking.
If the user is working with electrics, a fibreglass ladder is essential to ensure safety standards are met. An example of an approved product is Werner’s Trade Fibreglass Stepladder, which comprises non-conductive stiles, 298mm tread pitch, slip-resistant treads, holster top with specially designed tool holders, and EDGE bracing for added protection against knocks and damage.
If user requirements demand a versatile outdoor use ladder, then a combination ladder with slip resistant feet and a stabiliser bar could be one option. Werner’s ExtensionPLUS™ X4 model is a 4-in-1 solution, combining a large stepladder, extension ladder,

stairwell ladder and a freestanding extension ladder.
IS IT COMPLIANT? Making sure the ladder meets the British or European Standards is also essential. With a flood of counterfeit products now on the market, it’s always advised that users choose a ladder that has been manufactured and tested to meet the strictest quality standards – ones that meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
CHECK BEFORE USE Once a mark of quality has been established, a pre work check is always recommended to ensure ladders with missing, damaged or loose components are not used. Before use, ensure all working parts move properly and that all connections are secure, being mindful to carefully check spreaders, treads, ropes and safety feet.
When using a stepladder, users must ensure that it is fully open, that both spreaders, if fitted, are firmly locked and that it is positioned so that he or she can face the work being undertaken. Alternatively, when using an extension ladder, position the ladder so that both stiles at the top are fully supported, ensuring the supported area allows a 300mm width on both sides of the ladder.
Certain advice is applicable to all ladder use. It is particularly important to make sure that the ladder’s feet are always set on firm, level ground. Never place a ladder on a slippery surface or where loose materials are present, which could affect stability.
Ladders are common everyday tools that workers sometimes take for granted. It is always important to know how to use it safely and for which applications. Appropriate training and a fit for purpose product, can also help increase productivity.
Werner provides a comprehensive training programme approved by the Ladder Association. This is designed to help users choose the right ladder and ensure correct usage. Participants can choose from two courses, “Ladder and Stepladder Users Training” and “Ladder and Stepladder Inspection Training”.
