THE KEY TO A BETTER FM SERVICE
How can CAFM systems help FM teams to deliver quality and innovation to their customers? Gary Watkins, CEO of Service Works Group, has some answers.
Computer Aided Facilities Management has been around for almost as long as FM itself. Systems have proved their value time and again – and continue to do so as CAFM steadily evolves. But we’ve reached an interesting point in that evolution:
technology trends in both
our personal and work lives are intersecting with CAFM technology, preparing the ground for rapid advances in what systems can do.
The opportunities for FMs to take advantage of this are considerable, with a whole range of new benefits on offer that centre around much greater data collection and processing power, enhanced service delivery, improvements in both quality and

efficiency, a better workplace experience and – fundamentally – happier customers.
So what do FM teams have to do to tap into those benefits? The starting point is to know more about the technology trends and where they are heading. We’ve outlined some below.
MOBILE TECHNOLOGY These days the question is much more
who doesn’t have a mobile device, rather than who does. As multi- function phones and tablets have spread across our personal and work lives, the message about technology and the future has not been lost on the FM sector – and specifically the work of maintenance engineers, where
the impact has been little short of revolutionary. Now virtually gone, are the old days when the specialist on- site required constant communication with the helpdesk to manage jobs. Now, with the right systems in place, an engineer can use a tablet or smartphone to gain instant access to work orders listed by location, asset priority, status or date. Using an app like Service Works’ QFM means this information is optimised for any operating system – so whether the engineer is using a company mobile or their own device, they have everything required at their fingertips.
Coupling this with QR codes, effectively next-gen barcode technology, brings another level
