TOMORROW’S W’S MENT TODAY

Graham Perry, Business Unit Director of iSite, explains the importance of taking a strategic approach to document management and the role it can play in helping FM teams to generate valuable intelligence.

Document management has always been an integral aspect of the job for any facilities manager, yet many would argue that it has suffered from being perceived as a back-office function required only for compliance

including Derwent and Thomas Crapper, on the campaign.

Adam Sherry, Managing Director commented: “We have always felt it is important to be a British Manufacturer rather than just re-packaging Far Eastern-made goods as British, as we have come across often. Why buy a Chinese product when a local UK company can produce a better quality product

purposes. There is a need for this perception to change and for the strategic importance of document management, or more importantly data management, to be recognised.

Many FM teams manage large estates, with multiple properties and hundreds of assets under their control, and this naturally creates an abundance of data that can add value to a business. However, this can only happen if the information is analysed and interpreted effectively.

The increased use of technology, a move to hosting documents in the cloud and the proliferation of mobile devices are all influencing how data is managed, and in using a combination of these factors facilities managers have the ability to extract value from information already at the fingertips. By using technology to collate and analyse data streams from multiple sources, including building

for the same price, as well as react quicker to customers’ requests?”

John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain commented: “Wandsworth Electrical are a great example of British manufacturing. They are a well-established company that has resisted the temptation to outsource or compromise on quality and have been rewarded by developing a brand that is a shining light within their industry for British manufacturing and all that it stands for.‘’

Since its birth in 1904 in Birmingham, to its present day high tech facilities in Surrey, alongside McLaren GT, Wandsworth Electrical’s British designed and manufactured range of premium electrical accessories are synonymous with bespoke British craftsmanship, unparalleled technical excellence and luxurious quality. Their products are installed in landmark residential, royal and leisure buildings in the UK and across the globe, including Kensington Palace, Eurostar Terminal-St Pancras, The Bank of England, Ham Yard Hotel, Battersea Power Station and Heathrow Airport.

management and energy systems, FM teams can identify cost and efficiency savings that ultimately enhance business performance.

Historically, teams will have stored and shared documents, but they may not have taken the opportunity to extract the information that adds value. Without a comprehensive view of data, such as expiry dates, lease information and equipment records in one central place, it can be difficult for teams to identify where improvements can be made.

It’s therefore vital for facilities managers to establish at the outset how they want to add value – be it through reducing costs or improving productivity – and understand what information is required in order to achieve this successfully. Only by using big data analytics will FM teams be able to gather the intelligence that generates results.
