UK Market for Wood Floorcoverings 2010-2017 by Value (£m MSP)
INTRODUCTION The UK wood flooring sector, which includes solid wood, engineered wood and laminates, currently accounts for an estimated 16% of the total flooring market, which is worth around £1.8bn. Wood floorcoverings represent a mature and competitive sector, characterized both by changing consumer tastes and a high level of susceptibility to the performance of the economy.
MARKET OVERVIEW The market for wood and laminate floorcoverings is now worth in excess of £300m and has followed an upward trend since 2011. However, market value remains below the peak of £385m achieved in 2007. While trends have been more positive of late, growth has been moderate as consumer spending remains somewhat constrained and wood floorcoverings face considerable competition from alternative flooring types.
However, in late 2014/early 2015 there have been signs that wood and laminate are once again winning share

of the floorcoverings market, with manufacturers investing heavily in new innovations and ranges in order to gain share in an increasingly competitive market.
Laminate, the largest product category, continues to be a strong driver of growth in the wood floorcoverings market. Its excellent environmental credentials have made it an increasingly popular choice in the commercial/ contract sector. Value added products with useful additional features such as non-slip, non- ‘sparkle’ and water-resistant or waterproof flooring have also helped stimulate demand.
The solid and engineered woods sector has been less volatile than laminate, with growth in demand largely the result of improvements in both the housing market and underlying economy. There has, however, also been a degree of pent-up demand, with consumers gaining confidence, and spend on non-essentials and big-ticket items also rising.
The contract market for wood floorcoverings accounts for around 46% of sector demand. It has continued to gain share, with a rise in use of solid and engineered wood for contract applications – particularly in the leisure sector.
