HIGH FLYING CREDENTIALS Here, nora systems explains why rubber flooring is the ideal choice for airport terminals.


When choosing a floor covering for an airport terminal, aesthetics are important but crucially the chosen product must withstand extremely heavy footfall with thousands of passengers, and their baggage, making their way across it every day. Rubber floor coverings are the ideal solution, offering attractive designs combined with exceptionally hard-wearing performance and more.


Rubber flooring is renowned for its ergonomic qualities. Compared to hard floors, such as stone, rubber is considerably safer to walk on due to its excellent slip resistance. Another benefit is that it offers comfortable cushioning underfoot which reduces strain on the back and joints; essential for passengers and staff who are standing or walking for hours at a time. Rubber also offers exceptional acoustic performance thanks to its shock- absorbing effect, irrespective of the high volume of passengers, their rolling baggage and other loads.


Another major advantage is that thanks to their dense, sealed surface, nora’s rubber floorcoverings do not require any coatings. Even on highly frequented routes, rubber does not form unsightly track marks. Whereas other resilient floorcoverings have to be treated regularly, as soon as the surface coating has been scratched, becomes stained, or wears down. This is both time-consuming and expensive and can cause considerable disruptions to passengers as areas of the terminal have to be cordoned off during refurbishment.

Rubber floorcoverings, on the other hand, still look practically as good as new, even after years of intensive use. For example, in 1969 nora systems installed 80,000m² of its ‘round pastille’ floor covering at Frankfurt airport. To this day, the footfall of millions of passengers, heavy luggage trolleys and even stamped out cigarettes, before the smoking ban, have had no effect on the quality and appearance of this hard-wearing and resilient flooring.


nora floor coverings do not contain PVC or halogens, for example chlorine. This means that in the event of a fire no hydrochloric gas, which might lead to caustic burns of the respiratory tract, is released. Nor are any toxic, halogenated dioxane or furan gases, substances that can get into the walls and ceilings and contaminate buildings, formed. The rubber coverings have been awarded numerous Green Design certificates such as the “Blue Angel … for low emissions” from leading test institutes for their outstanding ecological properties.


Rubber floorcoverings are extremely resistant to abrasion and, as they require no coating, are extremely easy to clean using just water and no chemicals at all. This is not only much cheaper but is also good for the environment. Even after decades of use, neither the functionality nor the appearance of rubber floor coverings is affected. That is why they are specified in so many international airports.

Approximately 70,000m² of the nora’s tough norament tiles have been installed in various areas at Heathrow and Gatwick airports including the Pier 6 airbridge at Gatwick airport which is 197m long and 32m high and is the first of its kind at any airport in the UK. It provides a pedestrian link for passengers with travelators and walkways in both directions and a glazed façade giving passengers a unique and spectacular view across the airfield.
