WITH ACELITY Acelity’s BIOSORB™ Gelling Fibre Dressing is a new and unique wound dressing that forms a gel when it comes into contact with an exuding wound. The product, which is already available in the U.S., has been granted a Conformité Européenne (CE) Mark in Europe, and is on course to be available in the coming months.

BIOSORB™ Gelling Fibre Dressing is effective on a variety of exuding wounds, including leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, surgical wounds that exude fluid, partial thickness burns, as well as traumatic and oncology wounds. Approximately, 10.5 million people are affected by chronic and surgical wounds in the U.S. and Europe each year.

The gelling fibre dressing helps create an optimal environment for wound healing while protecting the

wound edge through its increased absorbency to actively manage exudate, or fluid, in wounds to support the healing process.

Furthermore, the dressing’s ability to hold its shape allows for intact removal, making dressing changes less painful for patients. Reducing pain for patients throughout the dressing change process is particularly important for people living with chronic wounds, as over 40% patients reported pain at dressing change to be the worst part of living with a wound, during a survey of more than 2,000 people. A common problem critical to address as part of treatment, particularly given that some wounds require frequent dressing changes and can last for months or years.

The gelling fibre designed to provide ease of application for the clinician, is comprised of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) which allows the dressing to

Pensioner Rose Thom suffers from rheumatoid arthritis from head to feet, to the extent that she can no longer grip with her hands. That meant, amongst other daily activity, she couldn’t grip toilet tissue.

Now Clos-o-Mat assistive technology means she can go to the toilet without carer assistance.

On the recommendation of her Occupational Therapy team, she has had a Clos-o-Mat Palma Vita wash & dry toilet with optional touch sensitive hand switch, installed in her Wishaw home.

The Palma Vita looks like, and is capable of being used as, a conventional WC and also has built-in washing and drying, so there is no need to manually clean oneself with toilet tissue. The Clos-o-Mat was the first wash and dry toilet of its kind in the UK, and the Palma Vita is the only one developed specifically for disabled people.

Rose Thom commented: “I’m very pleased with it. I can go to the toilet without anyone having to help

me; it’s no effort to use the touch switch with my thumb. My husband uses the Clos-o-Mat too, though as a conventional toilet, so it works for both of us.”

Robin Tuffley, Clos-o-Mat Marketing Manager added: “On average we go to the loo eight times a day. It therefore actually has quite an impact on daily life, and your privacy and dignity, if it becomes something you need help with.”

Manufactured in Britain, the standard Palma Vita is easily operated simply by remaining seated when the user presses the flush pads: simultaneous flushing and douching is followed by warm air drying to ensure the user is cleaned effectively, consistently and hygienically with no hand:body contact.

Appreciating everyone is different, Clos-o-Mat has a raft of accessories, including the touch sensitive operating switch, to enable the toilet to be personalised to individual needs, when initially installed and over time as requirements change.
