TRAINING & EDUCATION
Not Just a Tick- Box Exercise
Pamela Bruce, Managing Director of Nurse Plus, talks us through the company’s in-house training programme and the importance of ensuring staff wellbeing, and continual professional development opportunities along the way.
Nurse Plus has continually reviewed and updated its training processes since its inception in 2005. Quality training is of paramount importance to our organisation, from a safety aspect and when ensuring that our staff are competent in their role, as well to make sure there is always continual professional development opportunities for our workforce.
Staff are the be all and end all of our business. Our senior management team are invested in their welfare and growth and so support employees to be the best they possibly can. Training should not be treated as a tick box exercise, it is about understanding an individuals capability and expertise. Nurse Plus’ training is competency based and allows our workforce the option to further their qualification portfolio, which is consistent in all of our branches across the UK.
We deliver mandatory training for our care, support and nursing staff to comply with CQC regulations, however this isn’t the only reason for providing it to our staff. We want to ensure our service users are looked after in the best possible way, that their desired outcomes are achieved and that our staff understand and can deliver the person centred care required. Our workforce need to be aware of health and safety issues and understand the importance of decision making, balanced with allowing choice for their patient.
Nurse Plus currently employs over 40 trainers, with each branch having its own in-house, fully equipped

training room, so that we are able to run personalised training days throughout the year. Our training programmes are constantly evolving to keep up with changing needs and new legislation. We have recently implemented new courses providing a different style of learning for employees. Workbook style training provides a very reflective view and our online training can be completed with research. However, we don’t compromise on our practical learning, which is 100% classroom and competency based training.
Every employee is offered their own career pathway through a continual professional development (CPD) plan, and we encourage personal growth, development and internal career progression. Initial training for new employees is provided in line with the Care Certificate and The Care Act 2014. Further qualifications will be dependant on the client group an individual works with, a service users needs and the aspirations of our staff.
It’s very encouraging to have seen care staff progress to consultants, and our consultants and branch managers become heads of departments. Nurse Plus are also keen to, where possible, create opportunities to retain workers who have a good understanding of our business.
Our recruitment consultant, homecare co-ordinator and manager training days as well as CQC workshops, compliance, care planning and government recognised diplomas support our employees to climb the career ladder.
