CARPET RECYCLING UK
Carpet Recycling UK continues to lead the industry on sustainability thanks to the financial backing and support from its core funders and members. CRUK’s core funders are Cormar Carpets, Lifestyle Floors/ Headlam, Desso, ege Carpets, Milliken, Balsan and Marlings.
Their commitment and contribution has been crucial in the industry's achievement of diverting waste carpet from landfill. A diversion rate of 31% in 2015 represents considerable progress from just 2% when CRUK was formed.
Since 2008, the industry’s award-winning not-for-profit organisation has played a fundamental role in developing new reuse and recycling opportunities for the 400,000 tonnes of waste carpet that arises each year in the UK. These range from uplifted materials to post-production and installation off-cuts.
CRUK’s activities helped the UK carpet manufacturers to achieve zero waste to landfill in 2012. Initial success with recycling their edge trims and offcuts prompted CRUK’s core funders to find outlets for clean manufacturing waste and achieve zero production waste. Aided by CRUK, they sought outlets for post- installation waste followed by post-consumer material.
Laurance Bird, CRUK Director, commented: “With our core funders and members’ help we continue to do a great job. They have provided the vital impetus to the recycling and landfill diversion cause which would not have been possible without their unstinting support.
“However, further support is much needed as we work towards achieving our goal of 60% landfill diversion by 2020 and we are seeking new partners to join us.”

CHEVRON Kährs
Kährs has introduced Chevron - a new collection of patterned wood floors. Offered in four on-trend colour tones, new Chevron creates a classical parquet-look with speed and ease. Matching frameboards can then be used around the edge of a room, to create a border for the stunning design.
Unlike traditional parquet staves which are glued down piece-by-piece, Kährs’ Chevron has a modern, plank format – measuring 1848x300x15mm - which is fast to install. The angled chevron pattern and ingenious ‘parallelogram’ short ends create the continuous V-shaped design, which is further emphasised by a bevelled edge.
Crafted from sustainable oak, all boards are brushed to create a tactile lived-in look, which complements the warm white, weathered grey, classic brown and dark brown colour tones and the lively oak graining.
The floor’s design features 19 angled strips along the board’s 1848mm length, with angled ends. Alternate right and left-handed boards join to create the continuous zigzag pattern, which can be finished with matching frameboards. The ‘ready-made’ parquet design cuts installation time and costs by up to 50%, compared to traditional parquet.
Kährs Chevron has a multi-layered construction, made up of a sustainable oak surface layer and a plywood core. This eco-friendly, engineered format makes the floor more stable and ideal for installation over underfloor heating.
