Water / Wastewater 27 New Conductivity Datalogger Introduced

Solinst Canada Ltd. is pleased to announce the latest release in their datalogger series—the Model 3001 LTC Levelogger Edge. The LTC Levelogger Edge is a compact instrument that provides reliable datalogging of water level, temperature, and conductivity measurements. The LTC Levelogger Edge offers a number of upgraded features over previous LTC versions, including an 8-year battery life, memory for 27,000 sets of readings, higher accuracy and 6 pressure ranges. It also features a Titanium ceramic PVD corrosion resistant coating and a 3-year warranty.

The 4-electrode platinum conductivity sensor has a wider calibrated conductivity range, with autoranging from 0 to 100,000 µS/cm. Calibration is from 50 to 80,000 µS/cm, with an accuracy of ±1% above 30,000 µS/cm, ±2% between 500 and 30,000 µS/cm, and ±30 µS below 500 µS/cm. The LTC Levelogger Edge also features greater functionality when programmed using Solinst Levelogger Software or the Solinst Levelogger App. The LTC Edge can be programmed in linear sampling mode, scheduled or event-based. There are options for programming a future start and stop time, as well as viewing real-time readings.

The LTC Levelogger Edge is compatible with Solinst Levelogger accessories including the DataGrabber data transfer device and Solinst Levelogger App and Interface. It can also be used with a Solinst LevelSender telemetry system for remote wireless monitoring with data sent via email or SMS. The LTC Levelogger Edge is ideal for monitoring salinity and saltwater intrusion studies; road salt, agricultural and stormwater run-off monitoring; tracer tests, and providing a general indication of water quality.

Tintometer Group has enhanced its product portfolio with a new oxygen meter which utilises optical electrodes, the

SD 400 Oxi L. This technology enables the most accurate and precise measurements. The instrument is equipped with an intuitive menu and enables rapid test results.

The SD 400 Oxi L is a completly newly developed instrument that has been designed for the application of treatment plants and waterworks, research and teaching, as well as fish-farming. The luminescence technology combines high measurement accuracy with low maintenance and operates without electrolyte solution.

Highlights: high measurement accuracy using luminescence technology, short response time of the oxygen electrode, low maintenance due to long-life electrode, low incident flow of the electrode – no need for stirring, incl. software for advanced and simplified data management with data logger function, backlit LC-display for measurements in any environment.

With its standard BSB flask-optimised electrode, the SD 400 Oxi L is ideally suited for the measurement of BOD in laboratories using the dilution method.

Affordable Groundwater Monitoring Well Solution

Solinst Drive-Point Piezometers are excellent permanent or temporary wells used to monitor shallow groundwater, soil and gas. These cost- effective stainless steel well points are ideal for initial site investigations, or for long or short-term applications. Inexpensive NPT carbon steel extensions are used. While costs are kept

low, sample integrity is maintained. The piezometer tip and screen are stainless steel, and a barbed or compression fitting allows a sample tube to be attached to obtain high quality samples. Without a tubing barb, it is ideal for water level measurements. All equipment combined, creates a complete monitoring system that is highly portable and affordable.

Pressure Transient Loggers (PTLs) from multi-utility monitoring and telemetry specialist HWM have solved the problem of repeated water main bursts in County Kilkenny, Ireland.

EMR Integrated Solutions and Kilkenny County Council (KCC) set up a pilot scheme to investigate the advantages of deploying PTLs on water distribution networks on a permanent basis. EMR and KCC installed two HWM PTLs on the network in South Kilkenny, at Owning and Piltown.

The selected section of the network had been prone to occasional bursts. The traditional course of action was to repair the pipeline until funding was made available to replace the pipeline completely.

Both PTLs were located upstream of a pressure reducing valve (PRV) and connected to hydrants for the duration of the pilot. The PTLs were totally enclosed in the hydrant chambers, communicating via GPRS. Agnostic SIMs allowed for automatic best-network selection for data transmission. HWM’s free programming software enabled engineers to carry out a GPRS test directly from the logger in the chamber.

Following a burst, EMR retrieved data from the nearest PTL, three kilometres from the burst location. Analysis of the data showed two transient notifications occurring on a daily basis at 5:04 and 23:10. There were also multiple transient notifications that coincided with the burst on the pipeline.

After the burst repair was carried out, EMR installed a second PTL closer to the burst location. The two transient notifications still occurred on a daily basis at the same times, while the pressure transient events were dramatically larger than the original transient recording.

EMR investigated further with council staff and discovered that the local PRV, which was installed to conserve water, was actually causing the pressure transients. The PRV had a day / night controller set to operate daily at 5:00 and 23:00.
