It’s no secret that a clean washroom can make or break the customer experience in the hospitality and service industry. Whether we like it or not, the toilet is often the first and last place a customer will visit in a venue, which also makes it the first and last place to make a great impression! Unfortunately, it still remains one of the most complained about areas of any establishment.
We happened to be at the Cleaning Show in Manchester last month where we met some fantastic people, among them, were a group of terminal managers from a major UK International airport – their single biggest complaint from customers – the toilets, and more specifically, the smell of them!
Whilst It’s great that their customers have chosen to complain, many don’t. In fact, typically 96% of people will not complain to a venue when they are unhappy about something, instead they tell between 9 and 15 people about their experience. I’m sure many will admit to returning from the toilet to a table of friends and complaining about the smell, lack of soap or general lack of cleanliness in the toilets at some stage, rather than having a chat with the manager.
Essentially, what this means is that for every 10 complaints you receive about your toilets, there could be another 240 people telling others – that’s a hell of a lot of people talking about your Loo’s!
Our top tip – Keep them clean and fresh. You don’t have to have a fancy washroom, just one that is kept clean, stocked with plenty of soap and toilet roll and above all smells great!
You can have the cleanest of washrooms, but if it smells like stale underpants, your customers will perceive it dirty and with over 97% of British adults being put off returning to a restaurant or bar, because of poor smelling toilets, small & simple changes can have a massive impact.
