NEWS FROM Expert Insights
As the third largest private sector employer in the UK, providing almost three million jobs, and producing £130 billion in economic activity, the hospitality sector is vast, vibrant and constantly-evolving. Significantly, it’s also a huge job creator; last year the sector generated one-in-seven of all new net jobs across the economy.
Building on the work and notable achievements of both the ALMR and BHA, the new trade association UKHospitality brings together over 700 businesses from all aspects of hospitality, including pubs, bars, restaurants, hotels, leisure parks, coffee shops, nightclubs, contract caterers, stadia, visitor attractions and many more.
The formation of this powerful, united voice has brought together high-level skills and competencies in order to deliver strong technical expertise and counsel for members across a range of issues. There are many big lever issues where our size and voice will enable us to stage greater interventions at government level that deliver meaningful change for the future.
Businesses operating in our sector need the right commercial environment in which to prosper and continue to grow, invest and innovate. Our voice will be heard loud and clear in Westminster and I’m determined UKHospitality will ensure that the government has a full understanding of the social and economic impacts of policies such as the National Living Wage, business rates and Brexit.

striving to tempt customers out of their homes to enjoy themselves in a social setting. Maintaining thriving and prosperous high streets and social spaces is going to be crucial for the future of the sector and the long-term wellbeing of the UK economy.
A key plank of setting out our vision of what the industry’s biggest trade body intends to deliver on behalf of the many high-quality businesses it represents, we have launched our inaugural event, Shaping the Future.
Taking place on the 9th July, the event will provide us with the chance to work together to redouble our influence on the Government in order to make hospitality a policy priority. This landmark conference will be an amalgamation of industry expertise, giving us an opportunity to share our plans and ambitions for the future. Businesses of all sizes are facing similar challenges and the conference will bring everyone together to discuss how we can ensure a prosperous future for all.
At events over the last year I have talked about unifying industry’s voice under a new organisation, with a new look, and at Shaping the Future we will be able to celebrate having achieved this. I am excited at how much more we can do collectively to ensure our great industry continues to grow and thrive.
UKHOSPITALITY RESPONDS TO THE LATEST GOVERNMENT BID TO CUT PLASTIC WASTE
Plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds could be banned in England as part of the government’s bid to cut plastic waste. The move follows multiple positive initiatives from the hospitality industry to reduce waste and environmental impact, but with the swift move for an out-right ban there are now concerns over adding to the mounting pressures already felt by the hospitality sector.
Commenting on the announcement, Kate Nicholls, CEO of UKHospitality, said:

reducing waste through voluntary measures. It is undeniable that this serious issue needs tackling, but with anything of this gravitas it needs to be considered and executed both effectively and realistically. This looks set to introduce yet another burden on hospitality margins with any additional cost coming on top of already high business rates and employment costs.”
