Miss Mary Llewellin, who lived in Upton House, formed 1st Upton Guides in 1917 and was its Captain for 37 years. So this year we are celebrating our 100th Birthday!


We currently have twenty-two Guides and are a very active unit, not only meeting on Tuesday evenings but taking part in a wide range of activities, such as badges, indoor holidays, camps, sleepovers, day trips, adventurous activities (tunnelling, archery, abseiling) and litter picks with Keeping Upton Tidy.


Camps are still a favourite event, but things have changed a lot. We no longer camp in farmers’ fi elds, but instead stay on Guide and Scout sites with proper toilet blocks, some with showers. Memories are made from these times spent away with guiding friends. Do you remember snake lashing to make draining boards? Toasting s’mores over a camp fi re? Cooking breakfast using a Trangia? Making a bivvy or sleeping under the stars?


1st Upton Guides is holding a 100th Birthday celebration at Upton Community Centre on Saturday 3rd June, from 2-5pm. We would like to invite anyone who was a member of the unit to come along and share your memories with us.
