develops key site for
airborne wind tech in Ireland
E.ON is strengthening its position as a frontrunner and early adopter in airborne wind energy, a profitable, emerging sector developing game changing technologies for renewable energy production. The company has committed to invest in the development, and if successful, construction and operation of a demonstration site in County Mayo in Ireland. In parallel, E.ON has entered into a collaboration agreement with Ampyx Power as the first user of the upcoming test site. Developing a test site is an important stepping stone which enables E.ON to work closely with the most promising technology developers and to provide solid support for the key, direct commercialisation of airborne wind technology. This development opens up new possibilities for collaboration with a multitude of companies which are pioneering airborne wind power generation technology as well as being a platform working together with both regular research and governmental institutes. In 2016, E.ON invested in the leading Scotland- based airborne wind energy start-up company Kite Power Systems. “Airborne wind supports one of our overall targets to drive down cost for renewable energy. In addition to making airborne wind competitive to conventional wind power, we would like to work with authorities and legislators to pave the way for introducing this exciting technology and eventually make it eligible to participate in tendering processes,” said Anja- Isabel Dotzenrath, CEO of E.ON Climate & Renewables.

ELLIS MAKES CLEATS FOR THE NEW WEAR
CROSSING
Ellis has developed a bespoke solution for Balfour Beatty to safely secure power cables running the length of the New Wear Crossing in Sunderland.
Currently being built, the new two span cable-stayed bridge features an A-frame pylon rising to 105m (344ft), and will span the River Wear between Castletown on the north bank and Pallion on the south.
Ellis was approached by Balfour Beatty after its initial plan to secure the
Siemens To Modernize Combined Cycle Power Plant In The UK
Siemens has received an order for a new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) at King's Lynn power station in Norfolk, owned by British energy and services company Centrica.
The gas-fired power plant will consist of one unit in a single- shaft configuration and deliver a total capacity of 380 MW to the grid. This is sufficient to provide electricity for 380,000 British households.

suitable alternatives at the time, the company’s innovative development team went back to the drawing board and developed a project specific solution which finally secured the order. Richard Shaw,

managing director of Ellis, said: “In the past we if we didn’t have a standard product for a project we’d been asked to quote on that would have been the end of it. Today though we are very much the industry solutions provider, and as such if we don’t already have the perfect solution we will design and
In addition, the existing gen- erator and steam turbine will be refurbished at the Siemens site in Newcastle, UK. Also included in Siemens' scope of supply are services including the extension of the existing air cooled condenser (ACC) and an update of the existing Distributed Control System (DCS) to the latest SPPA-T3000 Control System.
