Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome, A Common Malady Lisa Hogan, MD, is medical director at Youthologie Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine. Natural Awakenings spoke with her about this common malady: “Very simply, it is likely you have Wilson’s Thyroid

Syndrome if you have been told your thyroid labs are normal, yet you feel like you have low thyroid hormone. The classic symptoms of low thyroid hormone are fatigue, cold intolerance, cold extremities and weight gain or difficulty losing weight, as well as subnormal body temperature. Because thyroid hormone affects the metabolism of every organ system in the body, symptoms of low thyroid can also include depression, brain fog, panic attacks, muscle and joint aches, muscle cramping, irregular periods, PMS, dry and brittle hair, diffuse hair loss, constipation, irritability, weak- ness, sluggishness, lack of libido, slow heart rate and high cholesterol. When you experience these symptoms, and you are told your thyroid labs are normal, this is often a sign you have Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome. “In the presence of many common health conditions, including obesity, weight gain, diabetes, insulin/leptin

resistance, depression, illness, autoimmune disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, opioid use, physical or emotional stress, dieting, excessive exercise, menopause, heart disease, injury, chronic infection, cancer or iron deficiency, the usual thyroid tests have been shown to be very poor markers for hypothyroidism and often do not reflect the severe levels of hypothyroidism that can be present inside the body’s cells. Likewise, measuring levels of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream does not give any information about what is taking place inside the cells. “Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome occurs under conditions of stress; and, since life in the 21st

century is stressful for most

people, this syndrome is extremely common. A few simple lab tests and a physical examination could reveal if this syndrome is affecting you.” For information, contact Lisa Hogan, MD at Youthologie
