Chinese student wins music award

When Sibford pupil Liliana entered the initial heats of the Banbury Young Musician Competition in January she had been in the UK for less than six months.

The 16-year-old, whose first language is Cantonese, struggled to understand advice given to her by the adjudicator.

But just two months later, when she appeared in the grand final of the competition, her immaculate performance of Prelude by Gliere gained her the title of ‘Senior Pianist of the Year’. “This was the first piano competition I have entered in the

UK,” said Liliana, whose home is in Shandong Province. “I was very excited to be awarded first place.”

Other Sibford pupils to win awards in the competition, organised by The Rotary Club of Banbury, were: India, who was named best intermediate singer, and Abigail, who took the award for intermediate strings. Meanwhile, Isobel was runner up in the junior singing section.

Heading for

the slopes On the first day of the Easter holidays some 40 pupils from Years 5 to 13 left Sibford to catch the ferry from Dover to Calais for the annual Sibford Ski Trip.

The party will be staying at the Bruggner Stub’n hotel in the town of Landeck in the Tirol region of the Austrian Alps. They are due to return home on Saturday 8 April.

An Inspector Calls

In March, Year 11 English students and Year 10 Drama students visited the Playhouse Theatre in London to see the J.B. Priestley classic ‘An Inspector Calls’.

Junior School pupils have entered the world of publishing with the launch of their very own story book. Mission to Marshmallow Moon has been written and illustrated by the children, with a little help from author Lee Sterry who visited the school earlier in the term to conduct two writing workshops.

“The central topic was ‘teamwork’ coupled with space, which tied in with the creative curriculum running in the school,” explained Lee. “All the children, from the three-year-olds through to the 11-year-olds, participated. They were involved in discussion groups, character building, story development and the creation of more than 200 pieces of artwork which were used to create the illustrations.

“They have done some fantastic work and should be very proud.”
