Parents and the school

We really value the effective communication between the school and parents/carers which is such an important factor in the effective education of our children.

We very much encourage the support of parents and friends and we welcome you into school if you have time to spare i.e. to help with children’s reading, mathematics or language games, cookery projects, cross-country running, school outings etc. Whatever your skills and specialities, we would be happy to accommodate them.

There is a weekly bulletin and half termly school newsletter, which includes up to date information i.e. holiday and teacher training dates, reports from children and staff and other important information for parents. The majority of our communication is issued via “Parentmail” an e-mail system which parents must register to use. We also have our website and external notice board in the playground, keeping parents in touch with school activities, Friends of Stewart Fleming events, activities, requests and important dates.

The minutes of meetings of the Governing Body are posted on a notice board by the school office. Copies of the school policies (e.g. Admissions Policy, policies based on the National Curriculum orders, etc.) are available on the school website.

Meeting your child’s teacher We hold an Open Evening in the autumn and spring terms when you have the opportunity to review your child’s progress with their teacher. A School Report is sent home in July, including details of any formal test results. In the summer term there is an open evening where children are invited to share their work with parents/carers.

These occasions by no means preclude less formal meetings with teachers to discuss concerns. You can make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher at any time that is mutually convenient. Our Head Teacher has an open door policy to seeing parents – appointments can be made via the school office.

New Pupils Reception Class Parents of Reception children who are due to start school in September are invited to an evening meeting with the Head Teacher and relevant staff in the term prior to starting school full time.

Other New Entrants The Head Teacher will meet with the parents of any new children, who wish to join the school. Every effort is made to ensure the smooth transition of new pupils into the school. However, it is essential that at the time of interview with the Head Teacher that a child’s needs are fully discussed, in order to allow the class teacher to plan effectively and to give the child the best possible start to a new school. We will contact the previous school for records.
