Discipline and school rules
We expect consideration and respect for others and concern for the school environment. Some rules are dictated by a concern for physical safety and to avoid accidents.
• Walk quietly on the left. • Speak to each other politely. • Keep your hands and feet to yourself. • Listen to and follow instructions. • Attend school regularly and be on time. • Keep the school environment clean and tidy.
Mutual respect and partnership Behaviour and discipline are about partnership between school and home, involving parents working in collaboration with the school on standards of behaviour.
We aim to create a pleasant working atmosphere in school, with mutual respect between teacher and child. We explain to the children why certain standards of behaviour are expected and a reminder is all that is usually necessary.
A copy of the school’s Behaviour Policy is available for parents to read by request and is available on the school website.
Lateness and absence Both of these are damaging to a child’s education and need to be avoided where at all possible. The school holds regular assemblies to encourage and reward good attendance.
Children arriving late should report in the first instance to the late desk where they will receive a late slip and be marked in the late book by the Attendance Officer. The parent/carer is asked to complete a simple form explaining the reason for late arrival.
If your child is unwell please call the school and leave a message on the automated answer machine, on the first day of illness. The School Attendance Officer will follow up all absences and monitor the overall attendance for each pupil.
If you have to collect your child during the school day (e.g. for a dental appointment), you should go first to the School Office so that the child may be signed out; similarly, if your child returns to school later on, he or she should first report to the School Office. Please note an appointment card or letter will be required as proof of the appointment.
An unauthorised absence is where there has been no communication by the parent/carer as to why the child is absent.
Holidays
Stewart Fleming Primary and The Pioneer Academy as a whole have a policy of not authorising holidays in term time. If you however choose to take your child on holiday in term time this will be marked as an unauthorised absence and you could be liable for a penalty fine.
