School Curriculum

We aim to provide a broad and balanced education using the National Curriculum and International Primary Curriculum delivered through high quality teaching and learning with support from parents and carers at home.

Our curriculum aims:

1. To provide opportunities for all pupils to learn and to achieve.

2. To promote pupil’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life.

Our Curriculum subject areas are:

CORE SUBJECTS English

Mathematics Science IT Computing

Foundation Subjects History

Geography Design Technology Art and Design Music

Physical Education PSHCE MFL - French

Our Curriculum is designed to be cross-curricular, thematic and child centred, allowing children to develop skills within real life contexts. We use The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to achieve this. The IPC is a 21st century curriculum which extends children’s knowledge, skills and understanding within a range of subjects. It develops personal attributes and supports an international perspective on the world.

School trips and journeys are used to reinforce or extend work in many areas of the curriculum. These trips are only possible if parents make voluntary financial contributions towards them.

Sex Education Our aim is to help the primary school child acquire an elementary understanding of human reproduction. In Year 6 an emphasis is placed upon how babies are formed and born, on the value of family life and loving relationships. Children’s questions are answered sensitively and honestly, as they arise.

A structured programme for Sex Education has been devised for the children in Year 5 and 6, which is delivered by the school nurse. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from these sessions and prior to Sex Education lessons parents will be offered the opportunity to view any materials used.

Religious Education Good R.E. has many positive attributes. It encourages our pupils to develop religious literacy, to learn from others, to reflect and analyse, to develop a sense of identity and belonging, and to respect and be sensitive towards others. It has an important role in preparing young people for later life, employment and lifelong learning in a multi-cultural society. This syllabus supports the development of our pupils and will help to maintain our excellence in the teaching of good R.E.

Homework The teaching staff have devised a homework policy in which homework is set regularly throughout both Key Stages and follows Government Guidelines and recommendations. Homework is set on a Monday and should be returned to school on a Thursday. Homework is an important part of your child’s education and we would ask parents/carers to support their children in completing this work. Spellings and times tables are sent home on a Friday and are tested on a Monday.

All pupils should read regularly at home and log their reading in their reading record.
