Losses Murlene Mowery, 86. Millsap,
passed away January 21 after a short ill- ness. For years, she secretaried several NCHA affiliates. In 2009, she was in- ducted into the NCHA Members Hall of Fame. Her husband, cutting horse trainer Bill Mowery, predeceased her, but their sons, Rick and Mike, are active cutting horse trainers.
Charles Summers, 80, Mounds,
OK, died January 23. For many years, he was president of OK Pinto HA.
Glenda Bales, 67, Elk City, OK,
died January 28. She had been active in the OK Appaloosa Horse Club and OK Pinto HA. She enjoyed training and showing horses as well as participating in barrel races and playdays.
Jacey Smathers, Stephenville, died
January 31 at the age of 22. She had been involved in barrel racing, calf roping, team roping, and ACHA cutting in her too-short life. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jacey Smathers Me- morial Scholarship Fund, Tarleton State University, Box T-0260, Stephenville, TX 76402.
Charley Phillips, 78, Odessa, died
February 6. He helped organize the Odessa Riding Club and was the first president. He also helped build Moss Arena and was on the board of directors for Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo since 1983. He announced countless horse shows and rodeos all over West Texas.
Purdy Aristocrat went to horse
Heaven February 12. The 1996 mare car- ried the genes of Smart Little Lena and Peppy San Badger, and belonged to Alvin and Becky Fultz of Amarillo. She had $102,435 in NCHA earnings and was dam of earners of $636,066 so far. w
