Animals Are Soul Too! by Mark Weber

The recent film A Dog’s Purpose offers a glimpse into animals’ spiritual side. It follows the journey of Bailey across several lifetimes as different breeds of dogs with diverse human partners. From his first life with Ethan, a boy growing up in the Midwest, to his eventual return to Ethan decades later, Bailey brings people together, saves lives, and grows spiritually. He shows us our purpose—experiencing joy and wonder, loving and being loved, learning from life’s challenges, serving others, and finding our way back home. A host of pet rescues has enriched

our home over the years. Max, a black lab mix, grew from being our only dog to serving as head of household when new pets arrived. When we adopted four abandoned kittens who hadn’t yet been weaned, not only did he protect them from the other pets, he curled

around them just like a mother at feeding time. Prince was a little eight year-old

Maltese who had known only the inside of a cage before coming to our home from a closed-down puppy mill. He was shaking with fear at first, but within months he grew to appreciate our hugs, our other pets, and his newfound freedom. A year later, his sight began to fail, but he continued to sniff his way along his favorite paths and enjoy his special nesting spot in the leaves at the base of a sweet gum tree near our deck. His ability to let us love him and his resiliency despite many hardships inspired us. What special gifts have animals

brought you? Youth (of all ages!) are invited to share stories and explore animals’ roles in our spiritual journey at a free workshop, “Animals Are Soul Too!” For information, see the ad on this page.
