newsbrief Could Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome be Affecting YOU?
Lisa Hogan, MD, is medical director at Youthologie Aesthetic & Anti-Aging Medicine. Natural Awakenings spoke with her about this common malady: “In a nutshell, Wilson’s Thyroid
Syndrome is when you are told your thyroid labs are normal, yet you feel like you have low thyroid hormone. The classic symptoms of low thyroid hormone are fatigue, cold intolerance, cold extremities and weight gain or dif- ficulty losing weight. Because thyroid hormone affects the metabolism of every organ system in the body, symp- toms of low thyroid can also include depression, brain fog, panic attacks, muscle and joint aches, muscle cramp- ing, irregular periods, PMS, dry and brittle hair, diffuse hair loss, low body
temperature, constipation, irritability, weakness, sluggishness, lack of libido, slow heart rate and high cholesterol. When you experience these symptoms, but you are told your thyroid labs are normal, this could be an indication you have Wilson’s Thyroid Syndrome. “In the presence of many common
health conditions, including obesity, weight gain, diabetes, insulin/leptin resistance, depression, illness, auto- immune disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, opioid use, physical or emotional stress, dieting, excessive exercise, menopause, heart disease, injury, chronic infection, cancer or iron deficiency, the usual thyroid tests have been shown to be very poor markers for hypothyroidism
and often do not reflect the severe levels of hypothyroidism that can be present inside the body’s cells. Likewise, measuring levels of thyroid hormone in the bloodstream does not give any information about what is taking place inside the cells. “Even the range of normal lab
values is suspect as this range is based on the general population, and it is estimated that much of the general population has undiagnosed hypothy- roidism. A few simple lab tests and a physical examination could reveal if this syndrome is affecting you.”
