Where in Torrevieja can you go for a leisurely stroll around Europe? The Park of Nations (Parque de Las Naciones) of course. At the top of this picturesque park is a group of islands set out like a map. This area is also the home of one of the least known, yet successful clubs in the area, the Asociacion Modelismo Naval de Torrevieja, or Torrevieja model boat club to the British.
Although this is a Spanish run club, headed by our dedicated and hard working president, Pedro, the club welcomes all nationalities, and there is a large contingent of us Brits. The second Sunday of each month at 11 o’clock will see lots of members putting their models on the water. These include paddle-steamers,warships, cabin cruisers, working rowing boats, in fact almost every type of craft is modelled.
Some members have been making models for a long time, others are quite new to this absorbing pastime. New modellers are always welcome to help and advice, it’s not unusual to see a model on the bench with half a dozen heads peering inside and muttering! Experience in modelling counts for little, Chris, who is fairly new to the hobby has made a wonderful model of HMS Nubian, Gary who has spent most of his life at sea, has just finished the PS Waverley, a delight to see on the water, and hear the sound of its paddles churning the water. This is not a rich man’s hobby, it’s true that you can spend hundreds of pounds on a kit, but you can also make a decent model from very basic materials, my latest model, a fire-boat, was made from oddments, leftovers and a bit of balsa wood, it cost less than 50€. The idea is that each person enjoys themselves and relaxes in a great setting. There is also a major exhibition each year in the club rooms, also at the top of the Park of Nations. This exhibition usually lasts for 4 weeks around the Easter holidays and is well supported by the Mayor, council and local media.
Visitors to the exhibition get free entry and can see some of the best models in Europe, all handmade by the members these range from dioramas, to a huge aircraft carrier, built by Carlos, one of our Spanish members, it’s over 2 metres long and with lots of working features. Over 100 models of all kinds are in the exhibition, including tugs, warships, fishing boats and sailing craft, and most are radio controlled. Anyone who is interested in the hobby can come to the park on one of our sailing mornings for a chat and see one of the sailing sessions. The park is lovely and it’s a perfect way to enjoy a Sunday morning. Article written by Charles Oates.
