Pat Focuses on the faces behind our Local Businesses Bruce Munn - Hamiltons Butchers Benijofar

At the very young age of 6, Bruce came with his parents and older brother Jack to live in Spain. After living in a small place in Scotland called Troon, (we had to check how to spell the name as he hasn't been back there since he left) the family decided that a change of lifestyle would benefit them all, and especially the boys who would learn another language, so Spain was where they decided to move to. Bruce's dad now lives in Mexico and his brother Jack, who works on the oil rigs in Mexico, spends his time between there and Spain with his Spanish wife. This means that Bruce gets to see a lot of his brother and of course his mum who lives nearby and who he runs Hamiltons Butchers with. As the family were my neighbours for 13 years, I have seen this small boy grow into a strapping 21 year old who now runs his own business! Bruce and his brother both went to local Spanish schools so are totally fluent in Spanish, and as his girlfriend and all his friends are Spanish, he is more

Spanish now in his ways and thinking than he is Scottish. In fact he said when he first started working where a lot of expats were, he had to think about how to say things in English! Bruce's mum Jillian and her partner Martin had the idea of opening a local family run bakery, the popular Hamiltons Bakehouse, where Bruce went to work until he took over the running of the butchers last year. As the manager of the shop he not only works serving customers, but he does all the deliveries and paperwork with the guided assistance of mum. The butchers supply meat to bars and restaurants from Torrevieja , Guardamar and Algorfa to La Marina. Bruce starts work at 8am when the shop opens, but from the unearthly hour of 4am the butcher is there preparing the meat for all the deliveries and daily orders as well as making the sausages, burgers, gammon etc which are all made on the premises. The gammon is all cured and hung in the shop for 15-30 days. There is always one of the two butchers in the shop when it is open, along with another member of staff and Bruce when he is not out and about doing deliveries. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 8am – 3pm. When he is not working he is a typical 21 year old, out enjoying himself with his friends and girlfriend, or keeping fit doing weight training with a personal trainer - he is very proud of the fact that he has lost a lot of weight since commencing this regime. He enjoys cycling in the local 'campo' and taking his dog for long walks. Before he took over the butchers he also walked a rescue dog which he really enjoyed. Moving to Spain with his family has been wonderful for Bruce, he has achieved so much in a short space of time and he is even thinking of how the family business can be expanded further in the next few years!
