06 RAJASTHAN NATURAL VENTILATION
Studios 18 is an apartment development in the deserts of Ras, Rajasthan, designed by Sanjay Puri Architects for people working in a nearby new cement manufacturing plant. Because of the summer heat, all apartments are oriented towards the north, north-east and north-west. Circulation spaces connecting the six housing blocks are naturally ventilated thanks to the provision of square punctuations, and each apartment is cross-ventilated with deep recessed windows and is open to sky terraces. Bright colours differentiate the stepped, recessed volumes and also identify circulation spaces, while lighter hues on external walls reflect heat off the surfaces.

Public space for education, pre-concert gatherings and small concerts will occupy the new North Atrium while an upper level lounge will take in views of Confederation Square and Parliament Hill. The centre each year presents on average 1300 musical, dance and theatrical performances.
