New York is to become home to a residential building designed by the late Zaha Hadid, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa is to undergo a major rejuvenation by Diamond Schmitt Architects and a new ten-storey hotel in the Iranian ski resort of Shemshak is turning heads. TEXT: STEVE HILL

03 SHEMSHAK, IRAN PLAYING IT COOL

01 BELGRADE GOING UP

Due to open in 2019 is the St. Regis Belgrade and The Residences at The St. Regis Belgrade. The Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide project features a 125-room hotel and 220 St. Regis branded residences in Kula Belgrade which, at 167 metres, is the country’s highest mixed-use tower. It was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Global, and will be the centrepiece of the new Belgrade Waterfront development. The St. Regis Belgrade will occupy the first nine floors of Kula Belgrade with facilities including a spa, pool and gymnasium, plus event and meeting spaces. Residences will be located from the 14th to 39th floors.

A new ten-storey hotel in Shemshak, Iran’s second biggest ski resort that’s a 30-minute drive from Tehran, has been described as “a fierce contender for the coolest mountain hotel ever.” Designed by Ryra Studio to resemble a windswept ice-rock formation on the side of a mountain, it is home to 67 rooms ranging in size from 45-square metre studio flats to a 270-square metre penthouse. All have been conceived to have “the feeling of a warm, homely ‘cave’ to relax in after skiing out in the cold” and feature pebble-shaped windows offering unobstructed views of the mountain scenery.

02 DOHA BRAND’S DEBUT

The recently completed Westin Doha Hotel & Spa represents the brand’s debut in Qatar and accommodates 364 guestrooms, including five pool villas and a presidential suite. The nine-storey structure has a limestone and glass façade that allows natural light to flood in with the atrium-like foyer home to a custom art installation. Guest facilities include a spa, complete with nine treatment rooms and a fitness studio plus an indoor and outdoor infinity pool and a man-made wave pool along with squash courts. There are seven dining options and a 3000-square metre ballroom, the second largest in the Qatari capital.
