DAY TRIPS - Depart from Senior Center Unless Otherwise Noted King of the Yees

Owen Theatre & The Tortoise Club Chicago, IL

King of the Yees is an offbeat and electric joy ride about living in the contemporary world while honoring one’s rich ancestral heritage - and the conflict that ensues. The affable Larry Yee remains a driving force in the San Francisco Chinese American community as the head of the Yee Family Association, a seemingly obsolescent men's club dedicated to the preservation of the Yee line. His daughter Lauren, however, is dismissive of its patriarchal culture policy, despite her father’s lifelong dedication to the group. When Larry suddenly goes missing, Lauren’s desperate search drops her into a strange but familiar world where she will have to embrace the past in order to get her father back. Explore the vivid history of America’s largest Chinatown through the eyes of a new generation in Lauren Yee’s hilarious and touching celebration of family. This play was a hit at last year’s play festival and is perfect for the intimate setting of the Owen Theatre (part of the Goodman Theatre). Prior to the performance, we will have lunch at the wonderful Tortoise Club. It’s hip vibe blends perfectly with the old Chicago feel, with mahogany wood from the original Pump Room and two ballot boxes dating back to the 1920s. You will have your choice of 1) roasted chicken salad with Amish chicken, greens, candied pecans, Danish blue cheese, 2) bacon cheeseburger, or 3) Lake Superior whitefish with lemon tarragon butter, served with sorbet and beverage. Fee includes transportation, lunch and performance.

Jesus Christ Superstar Paramount Theatre & Ballydoyle Pub Aurora, IL

A rock star stands center stage, awash in lights while tens-of-thousands of adoring fans repeat every word she sings. A football player strikes a victory pose in the end zone while a stadium erupts with ecstasy, celebrating the superhuman’s accomplishment. An endless sea of bodies stands for hours shivering in the freezing temps just to say they were there when the new leader of the free world was sworn in. We love and celebrate our idols, we always have…that is until we move on to our next idol. This is not just the story of the last 7 days of the greatest idol in history. It’s the story of the close friend who tried to save him and why that friend eventually betrayed him. This is a story of love and fear, a story of kindness and greed, a story of expectations and what happens when those expectations are not met. This is an energized rock opera that delves into the internal struggles of those mortals, those humans – including Jesus himself – as they drew closer to one of the most pivotal moments in history. It’s an emotionally-charged journey in which, in the end, each person discovers something about themselves when the stakes are at their highest. Prior to the performance, we will have a buffet lunch at Irish Ballydoyle Pub, including a house salad, shepherd's pie, chicken pot pie, beer battered fish and chips, with beverage and housemade donuts for dessert. Fee includes transportation, lunch and performance.
