New US river line targets UK with 15% commission

Holiie-Rae Merrick Hollie@travelweekly.co.uk

A new US river cruise line is looking to build relationships with the UK trade ahead of its inaugural season.

French America Line’s only ship, the 150-passenger Louisiane, will begin sailing in October. The line’s chairman, Christopher

Kyte, is targeting US specialist agents and operators in the UK and hopes that the British market will account for 20%-30% of customers. The ship will sail on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland, Red, Illinois and Arkansas rivers, and 16 cruises

will offer an overnight stay in Louisiane’s final port of call. Agents selling the line will earn

15% commission, with no non- commissionable items, and there are plans for a fam trip in December. “Cruise specialists can sell us, and so can US specialist agents, and it’s with the latter that we see our biggest opportunity,” Kyte said.

“Our average price is about £2,700 so there’s money to be made”

“We’re paying 15% commission and our average price is around £2,700, so there’s money to be made for agents. Plus we offer no non-commissionables, which is important to the trade. “We are the most deluxe river

cruise line in the US, with more departure ports than any other line. We also have lots of shorter cruises, so agents can include a

short sailing on bigger itineraries.” Kyte gave a presentation at

Clia’s Luxury Cruise Expo in Southampton this month and will attend the River Cruise Convention in Amsterdam in November. The line went on sale last week

for 2017, offering 48 cruises between March 4 and January 6, 2018. Cruises range in length between five and 14 days, with flights, excursions, drinks and Wi-Fi included in the price. French America Line can be

booked through Cruiseco and also
