New training centre is cut above the rest
A £1m state-of-the-art training centre for apprentices has opened its doors in the heart of Plymouth. Skills Group’s new 7,233 square foot facility
includes a 2,500 square foot cutting-edge hair academy to train the next generation of hairdressers and barbers, which has now opened for business. The premises aims to meet a growing
demand for apprenticeship training across the region, and will be home to a range of full- time vocational courses specifically designed to prepare young people for apprenticeships and employment – something employers are constantly demanding from educational institutions.
Latest survey shows uptick in confidence
Quarter by quarter, Devon Chamber of Commerce surveys its members, the members of affiliate and partner Chambers and any other businesses who register to take part. The survey captures business’ view on the state of trading and how this may change in the future. This provides a ‘snapshot’ of what is happening economically in the county. Commenting on the final
Quarterly Economic Survey of 2016, George Cowcher (pictured) CEO of Devon Chamber of Commerce said: “Business confidence in the county remains strong with positive results for UK sales, confidence and recruitment. Of particular note is the number of companies reporting increased cash flow and an increase in the number of companies increasing investment in both plant and machinery and training.” “Less satisfactory is confidence about
exporting. Confidence in exporting remains subdued. Companies are concerned about the

effect on exports to Europe and are unsure about exploring new markets elsewhere in the world. The Government will need to provide more support for exporters in the future as the country moves into a post-Brexit world. It is heartening to see that the Chamber continues to give increasing support to exporters right across the county, evidenced by the increasing number of international trade documents issued.” “It was pleasing to see
that many of the requests made by Devon Chamber
were reflected in the Chancellor’s Autumn
Statement, however there is more that needs to be done to invest in infrastructure in the South
West to assist economic growth. The
Chamber will continue to work closely with HOTSW Local Enterprise Partnership, local authorities, MP’s and other elected representatives to make the case for assisting growth in Devon and the wider South West.”
