PLAZA LEVEL DESIGN
(Clockwise) A Chihuly display graces the main lobby, while the mermaid imagery is a framed fine art giclée on acrylic which is backlit by a 30-second loop mermaid
video. Art is found in the details throughout The Vinoy.
GIVES AN ARTFUL LESSON St. Petersburg, Florida is coming into its own as a city that embraces art and there is no better starting point to appreciate an art tour than in the Plaza Level of The Vinoy Renaissance St. Petersburg Resort and Club. The Plaza design concept is grounded in the intricate details that anoint the grand entry and elaborate frescos. The local Chihuly influ- ence is captured in its artistic expression of this concept. The carpet design has fluid lines and flows seamlessly from room to room. New lighting fixtures are reflective and undulating, speaking to the element of the water that frames the hotel grounds. Relevant textural components, reminiscent of the light patterns through banyan tree foliage and regional wild- life, are defined in the selection of wall coverings. Like any Grand Dame
hotel, The Vinoy has a rich provenance…along with a few ghosts. The art speaks to the hotel’s mysterious past. There is a strong reference to a feminine presence blended in opacity with local influences. A mer-
maid swims along the curves of a Chihuly inspired detail. Historical figures of the ‘20s are represented in a contemporary artistic fashion. In a darker moment, when the Vinoy had been closed and abandoned in the early ‘70s, new residents were reputed to have moved in, includ- ing an alligator, whose image you will find today dwelling at the base of the stairs to warn guests to tread carefully. Stop by the Navigator desk to inquire about a tour of the art found
throughout The Vinoy.
