2017… REASONS FOR MALLING TO CELEBRATE… Dragon’s Den succcess

NEARLY 100 people attended the Dragon’s Den event held at The Malling School on a rainy November Saturday.

Local residents got to choose which local groups would win up to £2,000 each from County Cllr Trudy Dean’s Community Fund.

The successful groups were: • Town Malling Cricket Club who asked for cricket equipment to be shared with West Malling CE Primary School

• Larkfield Football Club who wanted money towards a defibrillator at their clubhouse

• Young Kent who wanted money to provide help and advice to young people experiencing mental health

MALLING Community Choir starts rehearsals under new conductor Kathryn Ridgeway for its 2017 season on Tuesday, January 10. We are a fun choir who enjoy singing. We do not hold auditions, and you do not have to be able to read music or have any previous experience of singing. We rehearse every Tuesday at the Baptist Chapel in Swan Street, West Malling from 7.15pm to 8.45pm and choir members pay a subscription of £2 per meeting. We have all the

singing parts recorded so you can learn by ear just like you do from the radio.

We take part in several concerts each

year, often working with other choirs for a varied programme and raise

problems • Kingfisher Pre-school Playgroup

• Blacklands Scouts, who needed a new floor for the Scout building in East Malling

• The Dorcas Centre lunch club who needed money to transport people to the Swallow Road centre for lunch combined with activities. Cllr Dean said: “It’s great to see so many local volunteers having so much fun providing activities for young and old in our area.

• The Defiant Explorers Group, Larkfield, who wanted adventure equipment including canoe insurance and river permits

hundreds of pounds for local charities including Spadework and Kent Association for the Blind. In 2016, we performed at Rochester and Canterbury Cathedrals, and sang with Maidstone Singers, the Eynsford Concert Band and local children's choirs.

This year, we will be rehearsing a wide variety of songs including Razzle Dazzle, Bridge over Troubled Water, West End show stoppers and Ave Verum.

We particularly welcome men singers to join our current

team.

So if you love singing, come along and join us. If you need a lift, let us know and we may be able to help.

“Chatting to other organisations at this event often results in unexpected windfalls, so the Dorcas Centre is now providing a home for a PA system belonging to Malling Action Partnership and using it to help the hard of hearing attending their lunch time sessions.”

Farmers market award SANDRA and Brian

Woodfall were delighted to receive the Farmers Market of the Year Award for their West Malling market, presented by Kent Life and Kent on Sunday Food and Drink Awards.

Sandra said: “We were amazed to be nominated and even more astonished to win the award. We don't do a lot of glitzy promotion, but get on with the job of offering excellent foods from our local stallholders, many of whom have won awards in their own right.”

The market is held on the fourth Sunday of the month throughout the year.
