Carwash boss in ‘slavery’ inquiry
ANAylesford carwashwas raided and three people were arrested as part of an investigation into an or- ganised crime network suspected ofhumantrafficking, modern slav- ery and money laundering. Police carried out simultaneous pre-dawn raids at thehomeofAvion Elez in Harcourt Drive, Canterbury, who runs USA Car Washes, and a number of other addresses. These were two private homes in Canterbury, and four USA Car Washes sites – three in the Canter- bury area and the other in Forstal Road,Aylesford (pictured). Eight months ago, an Al-Jazeera
news channel report showed secret film gathered by a Romanian worker which alleged appalling con- ditions at the carwash chain. The police operation began at6am
and officers searched properties and spoke to about 15 people to identify if offences of trafficking, modern slavery or money laundering had been committed. Two men, aged 36 and 32, and a
21-year-old woman, both from Can- terbury,were arrested in connection with a number of offences andwere
in police custody, pending enquiries. Officers will speak to those living at the properties to determine if they are victims of crime. The raidswere carried out in con- junction with the National Crime Agency (NCA), Immigration En- forcement and the Environment Agency. More than 80 Kent Police officers are involved. Supt Eddie Fox said: “Our priority
is to secure evidence of any offences while safeguarding any vulnerable people who may have been ex- ploited. We have worked closely with theNCAand Immigration En- forcement as part of this operation and would ask anyone who may have information to come forward.” Anyone with information is asked

News Water firm helps rescue crew
SOUTH EastWater has donated £750 to Kent Search and Rescue to buy equipment for its water search teams. This includes a rope rescue kit and water first aid kit. The charity is one
of 37 local organisations supported by the water company in the past 12 months. Kent Search and
Rescue has 130 volunteers on call around the clock to help the emergency services when a person goes missing. They include Mandy Apps (pictured with volunteer colleagues) who works as environmental delivery manager in the engineering team at South EastWater in Snodland. They help police find missing persons and also provide any help, including first aid. Last year, they were called out 84 times by the police. Fundraising manager Ed Franklin said: “The equipment purchased
with South EastWater’s donation has already been used in training exercises as well as live searches.”
Invitation to messy church
ST Peter’s and St Paul’s Church, Aylesford, will be hosting a Messy Church on the first Friday of every month. The next one will be in the Brassey Centre, Station Road, Aylesford, from 4.15-6pm on February 3. All family members arewelcome to go along and join in craft activities,
