Ross warned that Pennsylvania has

blame contamination on producers when the reality was that the well was not cased correctly. He said Marcellus Shale has a lot of methane in the soil that migrates into water supplies naturally. Natural gas has been seen by many as a bridge fuel to a future of even cleaner technologies such as solar and wind. But now some in the environmental community are opposed to natural gas, because while it’s cleaner than oil and coal, it’s still a fossil fuel. A growing issue is methane emissions. Ross said an increasing number of environmentalists are part of the “keep in the ground movement,” and that’s unfortunate. “We would never suggest that there
shouldn’t be robust and stringent regulations out there to ensure protection of the water supply and the environment,” he said. “But there are some who will never agree with fracking, no matter what the permitting process is or how safe you make it.”
Ross pointed out that supporters need to point out all the advantages of fracking, in addition to natural gas’ lower carbon emissions than oil and coal. Consumers are paying less for fuel. The fracking revolution has helped downtrodden areas in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio. Fracking has enabled the country to become more energy-independent and less dependent on foreign oil, which enhances national security.
The hot question to be debated in 2017 is whether Maryland will be a part of the revolution or decide to sit on the sidelines.
