In search of a worthwhile occupation, Goreham became interested in the subjects of global warming and climate change, and began drawing different conclusions than many leading experts on the subject. Soon Goreham had made himself an expert as well, only one with an opposing point of view. He is respectful of those who believe global warming is man-made because they have based their findings on data and research — “I’ll never say it’s a scam,” he said — he simply looks at the same data and finds evidence for different conclusions. Goreham says carbon dioxide, CO2


, is being pinpointed as the bad guy that


increases the greenhouse effect, which is defined as the trapping of the sun’s warmth in the atmosphere due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to the sun’s radiation than to infrared radiation from the planet’s surface. Goreham says about 75 percent of the


greenhouse effect is caused by water vapor while the last 25 percent or so is caused mostly by carbon dioxide, methane and other gases. Of that last 25 percent, Goreham says, oceans, plants, people and volcanoes are putting 25 times as much CO2


into the


atmosphere than industry. With so much CO2

Goreham believes, efforts to reduce carbon emissions in industry as well as reducing individual carbon footprints are basically wastes of time. “It’s not going to do anything,” Goreham


said and even went so far as to say that some emission-reduction efforts do more harm than good. The European steel industry, for example, is being “destroyed” by energy and climate laws, Goreham said. “People have gone way off the deep end


on this,” he said. Goreham said the push to blame human


activity began in the late 1980s when then- senators Al Gore and Tim Wirth, among others, held a panel — heavily stage managed in Goreham’s opinion — that provided evidence humans were responsible for global warming.
