I have also stopped reading emails on weekends and have advised both my staff and Board members if they need to reach me to please call or text because I am not ruining a few restful days off by being called “crazy or stupid” via email again. I am, however, looking forward to that next email telling me how great everything is! ◆

in an email. Because emails can be sent so easily they sometimes are used maliciously to bully or upset.

Sending complaints by email makes it so much easier for disgruntled residents to respond rudely. I have received many nasty emails; my favorite was from a resident who asked me “ARE YOU ABSOLUTELY CRAZY OR JUST INCREDIBLY STUPID?” I read that email on a Saturday and it ruined my whole weekend. I have found that most people feel the power of the pen in emails and believe they can say anything they want without any consequences.

Communities go through periods of peace with a feeling of good will amongst most residents. This promotes a partnership and good working relationship with the Board and management to make the community the best it can be. Then something happens that a few very vocal residents find upsetting. The emails with false information start flying. They copy every resident they know, who in turn forward the email to every resident they know and pretty soon the rumors are rampant. At that point residents start arguing with each other on the issue and more emails are sent that become personal attacks on each other, the Board and management.

What To Do

We have found that one of the best ways to put a stop to the rumors caused by these emails is to stay ahead of the unhappy group; which is normally a very small number. They just are so vocal it seems like there are more of them.

Communication is the prime weapon against the ugly emails and disgruntled residents. Sending out a mass email with the real facts as soon as possible, objectively answering resident’s questions when they ask about the issue, and holding town meetings are good ways a Board and managers can quickly address the rumors.

Believe me, I know it is not easy, but we cannot take the nasty emails personally.
