Holiday GUIDE #1 Pressed Against A Soft Blue Sunset

Santa Rosa, CA. ~ Thick, orange- pink ribbons press against soft blue sunset sky. Dark foggy-gray tomorrow with potential precipita- tion. . . La pluie est magique! For- get-me-Nots are standing tall, pop- ping up in the east garden, tiny blue fl owers mingling about, and green onions are pushing up through the dampened soil. And be oh so care- ful of fragile, slippery salamanders in their reclaimed hiding places, under your big terra cotta pots! Feelings of fall are everywhere. . . Lately I’ve been disappearing into my ‘newest’ used book, Monet’s Garden, Through the Seasons at Giverny, by Vivian Russell. This big, beautiful hardcover book is full of incredible photography and such a collection of Monet’s life as painter and gardener, inspira-

tional and enlightening. Defi nitely on my ‘Must Have’ list of garden books to say the least! Vivian Rus- sell is a writer and photographer, fi lm maker and gardener. Page after page of incredible photos and descriptions of Monet’s exquisite garden and intriguing life that will truly ‘take you there’. Handfuls and handfuls of

nutrient rich leaves are start- ing to fall, dotting the land- scape, I’m thinking leaf com- post. What are you thinking? Leaf blower using gasoline or leaves stuffed into black plas- tic garbage bags and put in the ‘landfi ll’, overfi lling the green can to be composted out of the area! Think again! Let’s use these resources. They are free, they are good for the planet, decomposing and enriching the soil and on and on. . .

feeders out again, hooray! If you are buying new feeders this year check for specs like: squirrel proof

yard. Actually quite nice looking and easily untied or unwired when removing a side panel for turning and working in manure and cof- fee grounds etc. Hay/feed stores almost always have free hay ‘sweepings’ if you think hay has gotten too expensive! Just ask them. Things

to remember when add- ing to your compost are no meat, no carbohydrates like bread, rice etc. or pet food scraps, to keep mice, rats etc. away. You can al- ways bury pest-attracting- waste a foot deep, safely, in some other part of the fl ower garden. Linda is recommending, for No- vember gardens, a 1-2 inch layer of aged com-

and weather resistant. Take your time when choosing the right feed- er with special, uncompromising features. There are local companies and bird feeders/houses on line too. Why not try bird feeder plans so you can build it yourself, tempt- ing black oil sunfl ower seeds and Niger seeds for fi lling! You decide! One of my newest gardeners,

Linda, is an amazingly vibrant 77, and so knowledgeable. We are making a ‘free’ palette compost bin in the northwest corner of the back

post on planting beds, perennials, trees and shrubs, everywhere and always pulled several inches away from growing stems. Remember, it’s the roots we are feeding and mulching. Chatting again with Cindy, from

King’s Nursery, she says, “No- vember is the best month to start ‘forcing’ fl ower stems and bulbs.” Google this one so you really have a clear understanding of forcing! You’ll have plenty of fragrant blos-
