Rise Above Plastics Since the discovery in the mid 1980s of high levels of slowly degrading plastics in the ocean’s gyres, there has been a movement to reduce the flow of plastic into the sea. Most of the plastics are tiny particles that are easily consumed and passed through the food chain, creating a toxic environment for everything living in and off the ocean, from tiny mesopelagic species and the fish we consume to sea birds and vegetation. The Surfrider Foundation hosts a discussion, Rise Above Plastics, at 7pm on the second Tuesday of every month to raise awareness about the dangers of plas- tic pollution. Tuesday, November 8, 7pm; free. Surfrider Foundation, 9883 Pacific Heights Boulevard. (SORRENTO VALLEY)

Oceanside Pier bike-ride after-party

Bike 7, 50, or 100 miles to Oceanside This Saturday, November 5, some 2400 bike riders will be pedaling their way along the coast or up the San Luis Rey River in the Bike the Coast/Taste the Coast Ride and Exposition at Oceanside Pier. For the riders, there are several choices; from a 7-mile ride along the San Luis Rey River bike path to a 100-mile two-lap trip from Oceanside down through the beach communities of Carlsbad, Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Del Mar and back up to the pier. The San Luis Rey route has no vehicular traffic once

the San Luis Rey River bike path, departing at 9:00 a.m.

— Daniel Powell What’s in

surfers’ guts? This October, UC San Diego School of Medi- cine doctoral student and native Hawaiian surfer Cliff Kapono sets out on a nine-month global journey to swab surfers in search of unique microorganisms. “If surfers have a unique microbiome or

body chemistry, this could begin to facilitate new types of conversations about the ocean as a therapy, and as a result inspire conserva- tion efforts,” Kapono told Erika Johnson of UC San Diego communications. Originally proposed as a local survey,

the Surfer Biome Project went worldwide with support from an $80,000 grant made by UC San Diego Global Health Institute.
