EDITOR’S COMMENT As the key initiative of its outreach and support programme, the ICOMIA Marinas Group organises the World Marinas Conference (WMC) every two years. This major industry gathering is aimed at marina owners, operators, developers, consultants, equipment manufacturers, service providers, government officials, nautical tourism promoters and port and harbour operators. The WMC is a travelling event, which is held in
venues around the world, and the move to Amsterdam in 2016 followed the excellent impression made by the Amsterdam RAI team that organised the conference when it took place in Istanbul two years ago. Held from 17-19 November concurrently with
METSTRADE and in concert with the Marina and Yard Pavilion (MYP), the symmetry of these events should be enough to satisfy the most demanding delegates attending the two-day conference and participating in the associated marina visits. They, in turn, will become high quality visitors to companies exhibiting in the MYP, as well as to marina equipment and service providers that have chosen to exhibit in other halls at the RAI exhibition complex. The 1,000-member-strong HISWA Holland Marine Industry Association will host the conference. Established in 1932 as a boat show organiser, HISWA

now lends its name to the two largest annual events in The Netherlands: the HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show in Amsterdam RAI (March); and the HISWA on-water Boat Show in the Amsterdam Marina (September). Geert Dijks, the organisation’s Director, reflected that the origins of watersports lie in The Netherlands, citing the fact that the first pleasure craft were built by the Dutch in the 1600s and the first marinas and yacht clubs were opened in Holland. The Netherlands is now one of the most developed watersports countries in the world. It has the highest density of marinas and marine companies within a 100 km radius and an impressive variety of watersports, nautical infrastructure, waterways and related facilities. It is now 23 years since I edited the papers for the
initial event in the ICOMIA series of conferences. Then called the International Marina Conference, it also took place at the RAI in 1993 and I look forward to claiming my visitor badge once again this year! This issue of Marina Euro-Report includes a
conference programme on pages 14-15 and a list of marina equipment and service providers can be found on pages 18-19. David Young

Front cover: Created from what was formerly an industrial harbour, Passantenhaven Doesburg in the Dutch province of Gelderland has undergone considerable redevelopment since 2013, culminating in a major renovation project that has added a walkway, which is equipped with finger piers, a large floating platform and a long access bridge (see pages 26-27).
