12 SUSTAINABILITY

Guidance for sustainable development E

xperience of planning, building and running its own marinas throughout the world has helped

Camper & Nicholsons Marinas to understand that the importance of sustainability should never be underestimated. The company therefore uses its market intelligence and deep personal knowledge to guide developers through every stage of a project’s life-cycle, beginning with the earliest conceptual designs through to the operation of the completed marina. CN Marinas has international

experience in more than 25 countries worldwide, creating boutique facilities through to large-scale resort developments. It is able to work across all stages of work or on discrete individual assignments, depending on the requirements of individual clients, and has become adept at working with developers, master- planners, principle engineers and sub-contractors by forging strong, collaborative relationships. As a project moves into

the construction phase, continued refinements are

made to the concept design and detailed engineering and works drawings are compiled. Load calculations are undertaken for the mooring systems and full specifications drawn up for utilities and ancillary services. Potential planning issues are addressed and the best qualified contractors are selected for the job in hand. CN Marinas’ project planning and

management services then take the project from signed-off plans

through the tender process to a completed marina. The management team can handle the tendering, adjudication and selection process for awarding contracts, but are equally prepared to work alongside the client’s existing contractors. On completion of works, the

testing and approval of all facilities and systems is overseen to ensure the marina is ready to start operation. At this point, it can either be handed over to the client or CN Marinas can

provide its own turnkey management services to run the marina. The company’s business planning tools and proven operational procedures – underpinned by the Camper & Nicholsons Operations Manual – enable a client’s management team to maximise occupancy and revenue while controlling costs. CN Marinas establishes the structures and procedures that promote best practice, generate sustainable growth and provide long-term profitability. For marinas that are already

operational, but are seeking improvements in occupancy, profitability or asset value, CN Marinas can perform an operational audit. This results in a detailed report on every element from buildings upkeep to staff training, from health and safety to sales and marketing. Ultimately, whether acting as

advisor to a client or as the marina’s operator, the priority is to ensure a profitable business that will remain sustainable. Camper & Nicholsons Marinas inf@cnmarinas.com www.cnmarinas.com

BREEAM rating for Land Rover BAR team

The team at MDL Marinas, the official UK Marina Partner for Land Rover BAR, recently celebrated after playing a part in the Land Rover BAR’s ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating for its team headquarters. This accolade was awarded for the high standards of sustainable design, as well as its excellent pontoon ecology work, supported by MDL Marinas, Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) and Portsmouth University’s Institute of Marine Science. BREEAM, the Building Research

Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method, is the leading and most widely-used environmental assessment method for buildings and communities. It rewards best practice in sustainable design and has become the measure used to

describe a building’s environmental performance. When Land Rover BAR began to

build its new home on the waterfront in Portsmouth, the team identified a potential threat to the ecosystem on its doorstep. The Solent once supported an oyster trade worth millions of pounds, which had rapidly declined. MDL Marinas was

commissioned to create a highly specified customised pontoon to complement the innovative headquarters, presenting the perfect opportunity to trial a new pontoon structure to house the oysters, with the view to reproduce and ‘reseed’ the wider fishery. Amy Munro, Sustainability Officer at Land Rover BAR, said: “This is a

fantastic achievement that we are all so proud of. We couldn’t have done this without the help of MDL Marinas, as well as many of our other partners such as 11th Hour Racing. MDL’s support with the pontoon ecology was invaluable and critical to us achieving ‘Excellent’ status”. Alex Beere, Head of Consultancy at MDL Marinas, agreed: “We are really proud to have contributed towards this accreditation and to have played a part in this great achievement. The oyster project has been fantastic to work on and we are seeing some great results. We are hopeful that this will grow over the coming months to help make a real impact on the local ecosystem”.
