Sponsors: the new team

The Solent 250 campaign has a new team of sponsors for the year ahead. Law firm Irwin Mitchell and business advisers and accountants KPMG join HSBC as supporters of the key initiative, run by The Business Magazine, which includes an annual listing of the top 250 private companies in the region, plus a number of networking events. Here the three sponsors introduce themselves ...

Irwin Mitchell

Irwin Mitchell is a nationally-acclaimed law firm offering a broad range of legal services to national and international organisations, small and medium-sized businesses and private individuals.

We act for clients who expect a fast moving, commercial approach with a ‘can-do’ problem-solving attitude. Relationships are key to everything we do and we pride ourselves on building long- term partnerships with our clients. The recent merger with Thomas Eggar has expanded the firm’s offering to include safeguarding our clients’ wealth as well as their business interests.

Specialist teams and unrivalled expertise

At Irwin Mitchell we understand that one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why our divisions are divided into specialist teams made up of lawyers with expertise not only in the relevant area of law but also in the business sector in which our clients operate including technology and media, banking and finance, sport and leisure, retail and manufacturing.

Our teams are led by partners who are leaders in their field and include specialist experts in niche areas to ensure our clients experience the best possible levels of service. Our solicitors are well- connected and have real insight into regional differences – experience that they then bring to bear on a national level.

Economies of scale

With a network of offices nationwide, we are able to leverage our national structure to create a depth of resource and cost efficiencies that are passed on to you.

KPMG

KPMG is a professional services firm with experts in tax and audit, as well as advisory consultants – in areas such as cyber security and public sector. The firm has had a presence on the South Coast since 1974, and last year the firm moved into a new base in Gateway House near Southampton.

KPMG works with family-owned and private equity-backed businesses through to AIM-listed and FTSE 250 companies from Southampton and Bournemouth, to Andover, Chichester, Weymouth and Dorset (and everywhere in between).

The firm’s South Coast office is under the leadership of senior partner, Will Smith. He is an auditor by background, with 24 years’ experience in leading the firm’s local relationship with fast growth and private equity businesses in the Solent region. There are 110 staff in the region’s office.

Unique to KPMG on the South Coast is the office’s ‘Enterprise zone’ for regional businesses to drop in and use at anytime, free of charge – a place for the region’s businesses ‘to do business’. It’s a flexible area with meeting rooms, pods, and quiet rooms. It is there to be used by regional businesses, education providers and charities for anything from informal catch-ups and calls through to board meetings. While on site, businesses also have access to KPMG’s vast experience and tools for business improvement and growth. The space has proven really popular so far, being used by entrepreneurs, charities and FTSE 250 companies for their meetings and board away days.

Will Smith commented: “KPMG is committed to the Solent region and to assisting local businesses to achieve their ambitious goals for growth and success. The ‘Solent 250’ is a showcase for these ambitious and growing businesses and therefore we are pleased to be involved, alongside the other sponsors, in ensuring their success is celebrated and shared.”

HSBC Bank plc, Hampshire & Dorset Corporate Centre

HSBC is a global bank operating across over 50 countries but here, in the Solent and Wessex area, Anthony Reed, head of Hampshire & Dorset Corporate Centre leads a very experienced team of two deputy area directors, 10 relationship directors and a support team with a vast knowledge across many sectors.

The Solent and Wessex region is a dynamic part of the country with great opportunities and clients. HSBC is committed to growth and connecting clients to opportunities. Today we look after businesses across the Hampshire and Dorset region, providing expertise that businesses need to succeed. As a global bank, we give businesses access to a geographic network covering more than 90% of global trade and capital flows.

The range of our clients is vast, varying from those with turnover of £6.5 million up to £350m, with some clients trading with 35 different countries and others dealing solely within the UK, but all are equally as committed in succeeding with our assistance.

One misconception is that we are here just to lend money but in fact, the team are much more than that. They are considered as people who companies can bounce ideas off and are committed to helping them achieve their full potential.

Anthony Reed said: “HSBC are delighted to continue to sponsor the Solent 250 for the third year. We support a number of the clients in the 250 and working with them to support their business growth and ultimately that of the region is one of our key priorities.”
