IN BUSINESS 2016
omen Board Level & Senior Executive
The judges were looking for women at board or senior executive level who have made a significant difference to the role of women in business within and/or outside their organisations
Winner • Nicola McQueen, Capita
McQueen joined Capita as a consultant in 1999 and by 2010 was managing director of Capita Resourcing, launching new services internationally. This year she was appointed executive director of the workplace services division, becoming the first female executive director; and at 36 she is also the youngest person to be appointed to the executive management board.
What the judges said
Windsor Vehicle Leasing led the judging for the category, and marketing director Julia Bolsom presented the trophy, saying: “Nicola has three children under the age of five, including twins, so as Capita’s first female executive director, she is also a great example of how having a family needn’t be an impediment to success. Humble and honest, she appears not to have compromised in her passion to be the best she can be, at work, at home, and as a role model for other women.”
What she said on accepting the award
“The past few years have given me so much opportunity and so much growth, and I can only thank everybody that’s been around me for allowing me to do that.
“Once you’ve got children, I think it’s a very conscious decision for women to say ‘I still want a career, I want to work’. You have to overcome the guilt of being that person, and have that drive. I was never shy to do that because I’m passionate about being a strong businesswoman and a career person.”
Role models and what the judges said • Eleanor Bradley, Nominet
“Executive director of Nominet since 2012, Eleanor is a brilliant example of someone using their industry to engage and support women in the workplace. Her involvement in the Girls in IT Programme coupled with her approach to giving staff the trust and freedom to choose how best to work has clearly resulted in her success.”
• Claire Rowe, Shoosmiths
“The first female CEO of this national law firm in its 160-year history, Claire has responsibility for the overall management and delivery of the firm’s business objectives. She is an impressive role model and leader, and an ardent supporter of women in business, sharing her own experiences and driving initiatives such as ‘Lean In’, which encourages women to pursue their ambitions.”
• Rachel Walton, Business Moves Group
“Rachel joined Business Moves Group in 1997 as a telesales agent and – through drive and determination to challenge preconceived ideas – has gone on to become managing director, a role in which she has restructured the organisation, grown the business divisions and rebranded the company.”
