Rising Star

The judges were looking for women who have not only already made a mark as women in business to some extent, but are also ‘women to watch’ in terms of future contribution

Winner: • Catherine Turness, Winchester BID

After five years at Winchester BID (Business Improvement District) Turness was appointed executive director last year in a promotion that makes her the youngest female BID director in the country.

Winner

Following a number of high-profile initiatives under her leadership, Winchester won the prestigious Sunday Times ‘Best Place to Live 2016’ award, earlier this year.

What the judges said

Judging for this award was led by sponsor Clarify, and CEO Claire Edmunds, said: “Catherine stood out not only for her achievements but also for her impressive contribution to the broader community.

“She impressed the judges with her vision and determination to make our cities a better place to live and a place for strong economies to thrive.

“She sits on the advisory board of an award-winning professional legal consultancy. She is a trustee of the University of Winchester Academy, and co-founder of a not-for-profit company, which organises charitable fundraising events. If that is not enough, she is halfway through completing her MBA.

“She is passionate about her profession and the main challenge she has encountered in her career has been her young age as opposed to her gender.”

What she said on accepting the award Role Models

“It’s amazing, it’s such an honour. I know you’re supposed to believe in yourself and prepare something to say, but I really didn’t think I was going to win. I was just honoured to be a finalist and congratulate all the women who were finalists in the category as well. It’s such an amazing achievement, and opportunity as well.”

Role model • Catherine Turner, Rapid Search & Interim and Firefly Human Capital.
