Enlightened Employer

This category has been introduced to recognise businesses that have shown a proactive, forward-thinking and creative approach to attaining gender equality in the workplace

Winner • Menzies

Winner

A top-20 firm of accountants, finance and business advisers, Menzies has a culture and leadership that empowers the individual to shape their own role in the firm. It is an environment in which women and men are equally encouraged to achieve what they want from their careers.

What the judges said

Taylor Made Computer Solutions led the judging for this award and co-founder and HR director Aly Taylor, said: “Menzies’ culture truly shows what an enlightened employer is. The development of its staff over time into positions of responsibility matches the goals of the individual, whatever they are.

“As an example the firm exhibited true flexibility, compassion and support for an employee at a time of critical need and, as a result of the support she received, her career aspirations at the company show great promise.”

Stephen Pritchard, principal of the Solent office, collected the award on behalf of the team. When asked for advice on how to support women in the workplace, he replied: “I don’t think we support women any differently than we support men … young, old, juniors, seniors, it doesn’t matter. We take a team approach, and we always try to remember, as employers, that if we’re asking a team approach from our staff, that there’s a flip side to that. Realistically, all of us at some point in our lives will go through challenges, so if we want the best from our staff, we’re there for them too when they need us.”

Role model • Blandy & Blandy

What the judges said

“One of the region’s leading law firms, Blandy & Blandy’s equal- opportunities approach has lead to an almost 50:50 ratio of women to men at equity partner level, and this year the firm appointed its first female chairman. In addition, its success in developing its female staff members has led to many of them contributing significantly to the organisation, including winning awards for their departments.”
