Business News Javid guest at ABCC dinner

Sajid Javid is to be the chief guest at the sell-out Asian Chamber of Commerce (ABCC) annual dinner and awards in Birmingham in November. The MP for Bromsgrove was appointed Secretary of

State for Communities and Local Government by Theresa May after serving as Business Secretary in David Cameron’s Cabinet. The event takes place at the International Convention

Centre on 19 November when over 500 guests will gather for Asian community’s biggest business annual event in the region.

‘We are delighted to have secured a major minister for our dinner and awards’

ABCC president Saqib Bhatti said: “We are delighted to have secured a major minister for our dinner and awards. Its popularity grows year-on-year and Mr Javid’s presence underlines what an important part it plays on the UK’s business calendar. “The dinner is our main event and the fact that we sold

out four months in advance is testimony to its standing.” Before being elected MP for Bromsgrove in 2010, Mr

Javid worked in business and finance and, at the age of 25, became a vice-president at Chase Manhattan Bank. In his current role, he is responsible for the overall

leadership and strategic direction of the Department for Communities and Local Government, which was previously led by Greg Clark and Sir Eric Pickles.

Bid for mayor’s office begins

Birmingham City University director Beverley Nielsen has announced her bid to become the West Midlands’ first elected mayor after being selected as the Liberal Democrat candidate. Ms Nielsen will come up against

Sion Simon, who was confirmed as the Labour candidate last month. John Lewis chief Andy Street is

expected to stand as the Conservative Party candidate. He has already stepped down as chairman of the Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership. The election to become Metro

Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority will take place on 4 May 2017. As well as holding several high-

profile business roles in the region, Ms Nielsen also served as a Lib Dem county councillor in Malvern, Worcestershire. For the past decade, she has been a director at Birmingham City University. “I will be fighting for a fairer

share of the national resource for the West Midlands, with a special focus on delivering infrastructure and housing,” said Ms Nielsen. “With a strong Metro Mayor and

a strong support team, we can get our Midlands Engine firing on all cylinders.”
