What is your role at the Chamber? I look after everything membership related, from recruiting new members to looking after our current members. I manage the process from start to finish.
What is the best part of your job? I really enjoy meeting the wide variety of members we have, every day is different. I like to talk to people, find out what they do and how we can help.
What are your aims for the Chamber over the next 12 months? We have seen membership increase by 12% over the last year, as well as retention of members exceed 80%. I would like to continue this growth and really see those new members joining. We have a lot to offer as an organisation and there are some really exciting things in the pipeline.
What did you do before working at Devon Chamber? I sold property, working for a really good agency in Plymouth – I met a lot of people there too, many of which are members.
What will we find Verity doing over an average weekend? Apart from ballet and parties with my daughter, probably at the beach or in the garden. Maybe catching a movie or trying to squeeze in some exercise!

New members Gilpin Demolition Group start with a bang!
The skyline of Plymouth is changing and opening up new opportunities for development, with help from the Gilpin Group’s hard work and expert skills. Within the region, their latest job has caught
the attention of many with the demolition of the high-profile Quality Hotel in Plymouth. The company, working closely with Plymouth City Council, started the project in May this year and saw the building reach ground level at the end of July, freeing up the iconic Hoe skyline ahead of the greatly anticipated MTV Crashes event. The Hotel closed two years
ago and has offered many challenges to the company, including the need to safely remove over 60 tonnes (60,260kg) of hazardous asbestos from the site before demolition work could begin. Sam Gilpin, founder of the

is unusual because the building is so high profile and in such a prominent position’
group, said: “The job is unusual because the building is so high profile and in such a prominent position, but otherwise its removal is routine.” The Quality Hotel has been the second high
profile project for Gilpin Demolition in Plymouth this year. In May, the company demolished the Merafield Bridge over the A38. Gary Giles, Operations Director, said:
"Merafield was a large bridge and it was around 14 metres high. To work at that height you need a machine with longer arms but those machines don't carry the bigger tools,
Gilpin at the demolition site
which you need to deal with that bridge. The best option was to
remove it with a controlled explosion.” The company has established a reputation
as the leading demolition company in the region and was recently recognised with a national award for their environmental work by ACAD (Asbestos Control and Abatement Division). Sam said: “We are delighted to be recognised
by ACAD for best practice. Since founding Gilpin we have always aimed high and this award acknowledges the team’s achievement.
