Mercury Construction SW Ltd carries out construction and refurbishment services across the South West from their offices in Plymouth and Exeter. As main contractor for The Long House, a new hospice outreach centre
in Holsworthy, Mercury Construction SW Ltd worked closely with lead designers NPS Group and the client North Devon Hospice to create a natural, eco-friendly, healthy building which offered energy efficiencies. The building has been shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards, including the Sustainability Category at the Michelmores Property Awards, The Community Benefit Category at the RICS Awards, and both The Best Public Service Building and The Best Inclusive Building at the LABC Awards, where it received Highly Commended at the awards ceremony held this summer.
Opened to staff and patients in September 2015, The Long House
provides care and support to patients and families coping with the impact of life limiting illnesses. Natural materials were carefully chosen to ensure that the building
remains sustainable, whilst providing a holistic natural human environment. Straw bales have been used as a sustainable method for insulation, as well as the installation of an air source heat pump and photovoltaic panels. It has achieved an “A rated” energy performance score. A wood burning stove was installed in the social space to provide a
homely feel and one patient reacted by saying: “from the first time I walked in I felt like I’ve been here before, I felt like I’d come home.”
