QF Focus Magazine

At the kind invitation of the Editor of this fine magazine and with increasing popularity in cruise holidays generally, along with the fact that the majority of us reside just a stones throw from the Mediterranean, it was thought that an article with a maritime theme might be of interest to the readership.

Tui Discovery by Michael W. Smith

Firstly may I say that am not a professional photographer but worked previously as a Port Agency Manager operating ships of all types, firstly in Bristol Channel ports and latterly in London. Now retired, living locally, I continue my interest in shipping as a hobby by visiting local Ports and photographing ships, mainly cruise vessels. I hope that some information about them can hopefully be of interest should you be considering a cruise holiday in the future.

I must make it clear that I am not a cruise booking agent and if there is interest in taking a cruise, then I suggest you contact your local Travel Agent for further advice.

I visited Cartagena on 22nd of July to see Thompson Cruises newest addition to the fleet 'Tui Discovery', photographed here. To the seasoned cruiser this vessel may be known previously as Royal Caribbean Cruise Line's 'Splendour of the Seas' having just completed a major refit.

RCCL sold the vessel to TUI Cruises, a German based Cruise Line, who in turn chartered her to Thompson Cruises and renamed as 'Tui Discovery'. This is the first rename as they gradually introduce the name of 'TUI' to Thompson ships, with further name changes on other vessels within the fleet expected shortly.

'Tui Discovery' is currently the largest vessel in the fleet capable of accommodating up to 1830 passengers and for this summer season is based in Palma, operating an average of 7 to 8 day moderately priced cruises within the Mediterranean. If new to cruising it can be recommended with excellent on board facilities and meals. For this year the Line offers an all-in drinks package at an additional moderate cost but in 2017 they are offering FREE all inclusive drinks - on this vessel 'Tui Discovery' only.

Thomson's operate 4 other cruise vessels based elsewhere and for further information, please consult their brochure on line or visit your local Travel Agent.

The vessel can be seen here alongside at Cartagena and subsequently departing for Palma, having arrived from Malaga.
