or the home in which the rooflights are installed. Secured by Design rooflights that meet the SR2 accredita-

tion have been subject to testing using hand tools such as hammers and chisels for a period of up to 15 minutes. Those that are SR3-accredited have been tested to withstand up to 20 minutes of attack from battery operated power tools as well as the hand tools used in the SR2 testing.

Historic preservation

In 2010 the Rooflight Company manufactured 10 Secured by Design rooflights for The Keep, a new-build research centre in Falmer, east Sussex that holds important historical documentation. By combining the security rooflights with a glazing which shields the documents from harmful sunlight,

Berkeley window  

A window type created initially to replace existing 1920s and 1930s steel windows is equally as acceptable for high-end new build as it is for restoration projects. The newly developed Berkeley from Crittall Windows provides the architect and designer with minimum sightlines, maximum daylight and fine detail. Where predominantly single pane leaded glass fenestration is to be replaced and upgraded the Berkeley offers an entirely new series of hot rolled profiles in a window where a solid steel chamfer replicates exterior putty. Hot-dip galvanized for durability, and in-house Duralife® polyester powder coated for excep- tional performance and minimal maintenance, the Berkeley window is available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations to suit any building where strength and security combined with slim and elegant frames are required. It is a high performance product with a unique articulated frame and sash, accepting glazing up to 18mm. Double integral EPDM weatherstripping is incorporated and sound attenuation for single glass is 20-28 dB, and double glass 28-30dB (approximate values averaged over a frequency range of 100 to 3150Hz). High-end residential, institutional and commercial applications will be typical outlets for the Berkeley and a recently completed central London project exemplifies one such use.

Two of the leading names in door and window architecture –GEZE UKand Kawneer –have joined forces to launch a superior ventilating window. Kawneer’s high thermal performance AA®720 parallel opening window combines with GEZE’s award-winning Slimchain window drive to produce a window system which is suitable in any sector, be it residential, healthcare, education, commercial, retail or leisure. The combination of attributes provides ventilation around the entire window perimeter without detriment to safety and security while achieving U-values of 1.5 W/m2

K for a CEN sized window with a warm edge spacer, offering exceptional levels of natural ventilation

and air exchange. The new and innovative CE Marked assisted-opening system has been fully tested to the PAS 24:2012 enhanced security performance standard as well as BS 6375 Part 1 (weather) and Part 2 (strength). The new system for new-build and refurbishment projects offers more versatile design options than other solutions as Slimchain can be used on windows up to 400kg – a significant weight handling advantage over competitor products. Its intelligent electronics allow continuously adjustable drive strokes and individual speeds. The AA720 + Slimchain window is backed with full support from Kawneer’s and GEZE’s technical, estimating and design teams as well as the reassurance of extensive testing of a totally integrated assisted opening system.

building, the architect wanted to specify rooflights which would provide maximum security to the building. Kier, the main contractor on the project, comments further: “We worked with the manufacturer for over two years on this project and they were able to meet the specific brief of high security rooflights required. They offered a rooflight solution which matched the particularly demanding security level that was needed for the building.”

Secure banking

More recently, an order worth in excess of £100,000 has been dispatched to a European bank. A total of 33 Secured by Design rooflights were specified in order to satisfy the requirement for a high level of security for what is a highly sensitive building, and rooflights compliant to the LPS 1172 Issue 7 SR2 level of security were required. Commercial director of the Rooflight Company Kester

Harvey comments: “Thanks to our investment in R&D we are able to provide a unique level of reassurance to our clients. With a long track record of providing roof windows in Europe and further afield, we can meet the needs of clients where design excellence and quality are of paramount importance.”
