Leading architects among 2016 Wood Awards shortlist In the Commercial and Leisure category,
Twenty of Britain’s best designs in wood have been featured on this year’s Wood Awards short- list, including buildings by leading architects. Projects include St Clare’s College in
Oxford, a mid-century house retrofit and studio extension in Wiltshire, a timber replacement for a 1930s bungalow in the New Forest, an artwork made of over 10,000 tree species in Bristol and a plywood exhibit seen at last year’s Timber Expo. Leading architects included in Education &
Public category include Foster + Partners, for Maggie’s cancer care centre at the Robert Parfett Building in Manchester, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects for Mellor Primary School in Stockport and Hodder + Partners for St Clare’s College. Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios was shortlisted for Stanbrook Abbey in Wass, Yorkshire, as well as Ptolemy Dean Architects for the conservation and repair of a barn in Harmondsworth, Middlesex.
Allford Hall Monaghan Morris was nominated for Alconbury Weald Club in Hungtingdon, and Glenn Howells Architects for Gloucester Services and Stihl’s Treetop Walkway also in Gloucestershire. Meanwhile drMM was shortlisted for Sky’s Health & Fitness Centre in Osterley, and Burd Haward Architects for Welcome Centre in Mottisfont, Hampshire. In the Interiors category Dow Jones
Architects received a nomination for Christ Church Crypt in Spitalfields, and in the Houses category, Coppin Dockray, Sanei Hopkins Architects and Strom Architects were all picked out for excellent design in homes constructed using timber. The shortlisted projects will be showcased at
100% Design – 21-24 September at London Olympia – and the winners will be revealed at a ceremony on 22 November. Established in 1971, the Wood Awards aim to recognise,

encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation using wood, and the panel of judges is led by architect Michael Morrison of Purcell. Past winders of the Arnold Laver Gold
Award Winners including David Morley Architects for The Hurlingham Club Outdoor Pool, Adam Richards Architects for Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft and, most recently, Niall McLaughlin Architects for The Fishing Hut, constructed on a Hampshire lake.
